A.J Roland – Reflections [Superordinate Music]

Continuing to showcase up and coming talent, Superordinate Music presents the debut album of A.J Roland. The Irish producer first came to people's attention with the 2017 release of 'Textured Ground' via Bullfinch. As A.J's inaugural release it set the course for his timeless sound which often sits in the creative space between progressive house and techno. The next three years saw the Belfast resident release a string of projects for Finder Records, before eventually signing with Superordinate in October of 2019. Eighteen months on and the synergy between the UK imprint and Irish producer continues to flourish across a bevy of compilation appearances. Now further establishing himself as a name to watch, A.J unveils his debut album 'Reflections'.

Spread across ten tracks it is a club oriented long player with several notable highlights, perhaps none more powerful than the acid fuelled 'Return of the 303'. Intense and techy, it sets the course for the entire collection which offers some emotive moments as well. 'Lost Soul' is perhaps the most striking with it's colourful, wall of sound approach to melody, while the more spacious title selection 'Reflections' is aptly titled with it's heartfelt, reflective qualities. For the most part however this is an intense and jarring collection of music, designed to bring life to even the most discerning of dance floors. The back end of the LP is a string of peak time creations, from the tough and growling 'Shadow Maker' to the driving potency of 'Slide', and for as big as the tracks sound they all carry a subtle but powerful emotional lean, whether it be of an astral variety or more nostalgic. An outstanding collection of music from A.J Roland, who has certainly made his debut album a memorable one. Highly recommended.
