LANGBARD – Peace Treaty EP [6913 Digital]

6913 Digital begins their 2020 journey with a new EP from label boss LANGBARD. Since re-tooling his sound over the first half of 2019, Robbie Fithon aka LANGBARD debuted the new alias in September with the double a-side offering 'Euler's Equation / When I Dream'. Support from industry tastemakers Adriatique, Tale of Us and Solomun highlighted what was the beginning of an auspicious journey for the UK artist. The similarly well received 'Folding Sky' EP rounded out 2019, ultimately setting up what promises to be a memorable 2020, beginning with the 'Peace Treaty' EP.

Getting the collection underway are the machine gun rhythms of 'Ceasefire'. Following a DJ friendly intro of tight beats and buzzing electronics comes astral synths and percussive flashes. Tastefully frantic, a series of timely drops along with a cosmic arp builds waves of anticipation before a well crafted break resets the narrative for a finale of buzzing designs. Up next and following a similar sonic ethos is the title selection 'Peace Treaty'. Backed by a charged rhythmic core, it's an array of wonky synth designs that captivates the senses here. As arcane as it sounds it's not without emotive moments, and therein lies such a compelling contrast. Glowing overlays not only add depth and mood but opens this creation up to an abundance of peak time possibilities.

The collection's half way point is marked by the driving beats of 'Escalate'. While the framework is well in keeping with the tone of the EP, there's a further lean into cosmic territory here. Wispy effects and pixie-like motifs create a surrealist vibe, before a spacey lead shifts the narrative further into astral territory as the breakdown begins to take shape. Ethereal yet tense, it’s kaleidoscopic slow burn fully saturates your senses as a flurry of drums cues an appropriately spaced out finale. Rounding out the release is the equally impressive 'Eliminate'. Hypnotic and fluid, the dynamic framework gets adorned with a myriad of cosmic creativities, smooth rhythmic artefacts and a deadly underlying growl. Moving into the break, it’s seductive presence becomes intoxicating, as fresh designs spark both drama and tension, before a stripped drop transfers energy into a stomping final act. It caps off an excellent collection of music from LANGBARD, one which follows a year that saw the Manchester resident evolve as an artist, a sentiment that now continues as 2020 gets underway with the fresh sounds of 'Peace Treaty'.
