Hailing from New York, the US artist got his production career off to a great start with a collaborative EP alongside the Polish born, UK based White Leaf. Released in February though Where The Heart Is, it showcased a deep, dreamy and emotionally rich sound that found favour with a broad spectrum of DJs. The seal of approval from one of the genres most steadfast label's has made for an auspicious beginning, setting in motion what promises to be a memorable year for the new talent. Now embarking on his first solo project, Wassu debuts on Magician on Duty with a two track EP alongside a remix from Funkermonk. Beginning with title cut Wassu crafts a slice of melodic house that sounds tailor made for an outdoor event. Warm and dreamy, it's fluid groove is perfectly contoured, setting a redolent foundation for soulful vocal wails and luminous tones to work their magic. Simple, effective and incredibly emotive, it's full of reflective qualities and hopeful atmospheres which make for a gorgeous seven minute journey. The companion piece 'Empty Streets' is equally enticing with a framework of tight beats, organic drums and playful tones. Ghostly vocals add nicely to the vibe, opening the piece up for a grandiose, almost cinematic style bridge that perfectly segues into a glowing finale. The release concludes with Funkermonk making their label debut and providing the lone interpretation of 'Ringwood'. Hailing from Beirut, the duo lay claim to a short but tidy discography, highlighted by releases on Sag & Tre, WAYU Records and Pipe & Pochet. Now landing on Magician On Duty, they provide an inspired take on 'Ringwood' to the cap the release off in style. Staying quite true to the main themes from the original, Funkermonk add layers of exotic drums and a less distinct take on the lead motif, allowing the atmospheric scope and percussive cadence to carry the piece. A stunning remix from the Beirut duo which rounds out a superb label debut for themselves and Wassu, two artists that you're sure to be hearing a lot more about as 2019 moves forward.
