Roger Martinez – Maya / Portal / Resonance [Higher States]

The latest release from Higher States finds label boss Roger Martinez presenting a new three-track showcase. Since emerging almost two decades ago, Dutch sound architect Roger Martinez has developed a distinct brand of progressive house and techno. Renowned for his pristinely produced club-effective approach, Roger has compiled an impressive resume across a near twenty-year stretch. Balance Music, Lost & Found, Sudbeat and his own Higher States imprint have been regular landing spots for his transcendent productions, in turn yielding support from Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Sasha, as he continues to maneuver himself through the confines of modern electronic music. With 2024 getting underway with remixes for Mango Alley and UV, Roger now returns to his Higher States imprint, presenting his first original project of the year ‘Maya / Portal / Resonance’.

Roger’s craftsmanship reveals itself across the coral monochromes of lead selection ‘Maya’. Muscular kick drums and jet force propulsions provide a DJ friendly intro, as the bassline drops for a rush of pneumatic energy. Stepping decisively on the gas, it's a free-flowing exchange of emotive chord changes and clustered synth mutations which provide an enduring main theme, while a dreamy panoramic break is sure to cast a mesmerizing spell over the dancefloor, all while maintaining a sense of urgency and spontaneity that astute progressive house fans will appreciate.

Beneath the rejuvenating sounds of 'Maya' lies the equally impressive ‘Portal'. Continuing his groove-centric approach, Roger’s pristine production chops serve him well here, bursting with ultrasonic qualities and a keen sense of drama and tension. In what is an energy rush for the ages, it's a rollercoaster of swing heavy chord stabs and siren-like wails which provide a prophetic storyboard, while a foundation of titanic kick drums and chunky grooves keep the focus firmly on a peak time dancefloor.

Rounding out the release are the hypnotic qualities of 'Resonance', a track where Roger balances the loud-soft dynamics which seem to work so well on the dancefloor. Superficially, it might come across as a classic chunk of progressive-tech, but it exists in a different sonic world, as multiple layers of rebounding rhythms, stirring chord changes and arpeggiated sequences get woven around a core of beefy grooves and cleverly coaxed atmospheric swells. The break's beginnings bring a sense of controlled chaos, as deconstructed vocals shapeshift and melt into a wave of hyperbolic arps, sparking a finale that is equal parts uplifting and groovy. A fitting conclusion to what is a unique look into Roger's repertoire, and the infectious sound he has built his career on.
