Pedro Capelossi makes his debut on Deersky’s Soundteller Records with ‘Sonar’. Based in Barcelona, the Spanish artist is a fresh name in the progressive music scene this year. A string of releases on A Must Have got his career off to a great start before he eventually landed on Balkan Connection’s BC2, Clinique Recordings and Electronic Tree. Now embarking on the biggest release of his career, Pedro presents his debut single for Soundteller alongside remixes from Alec Araujo and Julian Nates.

For an artist less than a year into his electronic music journey ‘Sonar’ is exceptionally well produced and also remarkably creative. It’s big, buzzing groove is immediately appealing, almost with a speed garage vibe in some ways but character wise sitting right in the purest spectrum of progressive house. The percussive elements are fresh, vibrant and complement the undulating foundation wonderfully, while an array of trippy effects and phasing noise work wonders during the near two minute interlude. Ultimately it’s the pixie-like melodies which win you over, particularly coming out of that anticipatory break, perfectly segueing into an exhilarating finale.

First up on the remixes is Alec Araujo who also makes his Soundteller debut here. The Brazilian artist has been a favourite of Hernan Cattaneo, Nick Warren and Paul Oakenfold over the last year and delivers a superb rendition of ‘Sonar’ here. The tempo comes down and the groove opens up for a deeper yet equally inspired version. The dance floor sensibility proves to be quite high with a rhythmic, swing heavy core and very little in the way of big, boisterous elements. The setup out of the break is the magic moment for me, with a wall of percussion and noise melding in sonic decay as the beats drop for a euphoric rush.

The release concludes with Julian Nates rounding out this trio of Soundteller debutants. Heralded as one of Argentina’s top progressive prospects, Julian has made a name for himself with releases on Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden and Antrim’s Or Two Strangers imprint. He continues a run of strong productions here with a pure progressive take on ‘Sonar’. Very much inline with what the genre’s top DJs are playing, Julian reworks the melodic elements into a somewhat indistinct yet incredibly emotive storyboard of pixie-esque clusters. The warmth and cadence of the groove are quite appealing and a hazy harmonic break ultimately ties everything together with a well crafted build and classy drop. A great remix from Julian, capping off a release where three new artists get added to the Soundteller roster with some of their all time best work. Don’t miss it.
