Paul Sawyer – Riotous [ICONYC]

John Johnson's ICONYC continues a strong fall season by welcoming Paul Sawyer back to the label for a new single. The UK artist has become a regular contributor to the US imprint since making his label debut in 2019. Two years on and Paul has delivered four singles and a remix for ICONYC, while also laying claim to releases via Movement Recordings, Perfecto Black and his own Krafted imprint. Now following a remix for The Black Chapel Collective, Paul returns to ICONYC with 'Riotous', alongside remixes from Betoko and Mundo D.

Always having a keen nose for the dancefloor, Paul's 'Riotous' carries a timeless sensibility along with it's charged groove. Colourful melodies, vivid effects and a seamless flow of rhythm and drive are the order of the day here. The main break sits at the heart of the journey, spine tingling and emotive in equal measure, building subtly as symphonic waves give way to a gentle crescendo and goosebump worthy finale.

Whether working in collaboration or on remix duty, Betoko has been a regular contributor to Paul's ICONYC releases in recent years. Here we find him delivering the first remix in fine style with a rework that overhauls the groove into a subterranean ripple that is sure to move any dance floor. The musical side of the original is well represented here as well, but on a subtler level and while it leaves a bit more to the imagination it's euphoric message lands with just as much impact.

Rounding out the release with the second interpretation is Mundo D who makes his label debut. Fresh off a strong run of releases for Nein Records, Sincopat and Steyoyke, the Spanish artist dials in an Indie Dance style rework that complements the previous two versions beautifully. Darker and dubbier in execution, it's a mix that takes square aim at the dance floor with charged beats, muscular grooves and a wealth of striking effects. Smooth chord changes provide the bulk of the emotional response here, but it's ultimately a super sonic break which not only seals it's brilliance but spearheads a dynamic drop and buzzing finale. A powerful remix from Mundo D which caps off another excellent release for ICONYC, one where Paul Sawyer gives us one of his finest tracks to date. Don't miss it.
