Parallel Universe – Shine & Darkness [Onestar Records]

Parallel Universe debuts on Onestar Records with a brand new single entitled 'Shine & Darkness'. Hailing from Colombia, Ethereal Mist and Mauro Pierotti make up the Parallel Universe production duo. The Medellin residents first conceptualized the project in 2018 with releases on Clubsonica Records and Spring Tube. Now firmly established as one of the genre's top up and coming duos, Parallel Universe has landed 2019 releases on Balkan Connection, Stellar Fountain and Clubsonica, the latter of which appears to be acting as their primary home. Their Onestar debut comes amidst much anticipation and with remixes from Suntech & Jhonny LP and PINO it makes for a release with some of Colombia's best talent.

Having already developed a distinctive sound, Parallel Universe continues to impress with 'Shine & Darkness'. Backed by a spacious groove it's the elephant-like tonal theme which is most striking here. It's indistinct enough to not be overbearing and the layering of tranquil arps and a trippy vocal narrative add just the right amount of cosmic flair. Sitting in the creative space between progressive house and melodic techno this might be the Colombian duos most engaging work to date.

Onestar label bosses Suntech & Jhonny LP continue to be Colombia's most acclaimed progressive house duo. The meeting of their creative minds always seems to result in dance floor magic and their take on 'Shine & Darkness' is no different. The Medellin residents stay true to the main themes from the original but a beefed up drum section and kaleidoscopic chime add a fuller and more trippy vibe overall. The main break while brief accomplishes a lot, building with flurries of drums and a vortex of voices before giving way to a big drop and groovy finale.

The second an final interpretation of 'Shine & Darkness' is provided by PINO who returns to the label for his second appearance. Also residing in Medellín, Martin Pineda Velez aka PINO made his Onestar debut in April of this year with his 'It Was Revel' single in collaboration with label boss Jhonny LP. It successfully set in motion Martin's production career who has a long history as DJ in Colombia. Now presenting his first ever solo production, PINO provides an excellent rendition of 'Shine & darkness to cap off the release. In stripping the groove down, PINO has put a greater focus on the strong lead elements, both of which intertwine and translate beautifully over a robust and highly rhythmic framework. Serene yet composed, the main break offers a cinematic feel, icy in delivery which the vocal elements work wonderfully with, as a tepid rush ignites an exhilarating third act. An excellent remix from PINO which rounds out a great Onestar debut for Parallel Universe. Highly Recommended.
