Odd Space – Garnet River [Port 81 Records]

0 second read

Port 81 Records returns for their third release, welcoming Odd Space to the label for his debut EP. Based in Colombia, Port 81 Records has gotten off to a great start with two releases that have resonated both in the melodic techno and progressive house communities. With strong ties to their countries electronic music culture and a fresh approach the imprint looks set to be recognized globally for their cutting edge sounds. The label’s third release comes from the new and mysterious Odd Space. Little is known about Odd Space and this being his first ever release just makes for even more intrigue.

Beginning with the title and showcase piece ‘Garnet River’ we begin to get a feel for what Odd Space is all about. Warm, punchy kicks and metallic designs immediately illuminate your mind while a trail of eerie effects develops a mystical storyboard. Refinement is the key and Odd Space seems have it in spades, with moments where granular electronics, melancholic tones and haunting pads steal the air on this unforgettable trip.

Continuing with ‘Unseen Flight’ Odd Space creates more of a progressive minded vibe with a warm, full groove and layers of atmosphere guiding you on a wonderfully cosmic journey. Deeply hypnotic, an evolving narrative captivates the mind on a meditative level, while it’s perfectly contoured groove never loses sight of the dance floor.

The third and final original ‘Ghost Train’ finds Odd Space creating a trippier melodic techno environment. Free flowing modular design makes for an unpredictable synth storyboard that quickly burrows deep into your subconscious, before melancholic chord changes and mallet-like clusters converge for a tasteful apex.

The first interpretation of ‘Ghost Train’ is provided by Dabeat who makes his label debut here. The Colombian artist and B4U Records label boss is one of his country’s most exciting progressive house talents. Whether producing solo or with frequent studio partner Kamilo Sanclemente, Dabeat is renowned for his smooth emotive creations. Appearances on Beatfreak Recordings, Clubsonica Records and FSOV highlight his discography with regular support coming in from Hernan Cattaneo and NIck Warren. For his ‘Ghost Train’ interpretation Dabeat stays true to the main themes from the original while adding a warmer, fuller groove and progressive minded sensibilities. A great complement to the original and definitely one for the true progressive house aficionado.

Closing the release out and providing the second and final interpretation of ‘Ghost Train’ is Radeon who also makes his label debut here. Based in Colombia, the Cali resident has a short but meticulous discography with appearances on Lord Musik and his Sheitanisme imprint. His ‘Ghost Train’ interpretation has turned out wonderfully as he plays off the main themes with a tight stripped back groove, rolling rhythms and devilish modulation. It caps off what is an exceptionally well rounded release for Port 81, who continue to be a label doing fresh and inspired projects. Highly recommended.
