Morphing Spot – Mentality [Soundteller Records]

Presenting his first ever EP, Morphing Spot debuts on Deersky's Soundteller Records with 'Mentality'. The Russian artist will be a new name for most having just one previous release, a contribution to Natura Viva's 'Pangea' collection from December of last year. Now the Krasnodar resident lands on Poland's finest progressive house imprint with a four track artist showcase.

Beginning with title cut Morphing Spot moves through murky, melodic techno meanderings. Tight, rhythmic and incredibly astral, it's an engaging storyboard from the outset, one which presents ghostly vocal fragments and metallic designs over a buzzing groove and emotive chord changes. One for the more astute listener and a prefect prelude to the EP's second selection 'Eternal Youth'. The quirky, melodic sensibilities continue here with a wonky lead theme, offset harmonics and once again a lovely (yet quite indistinct) vocal narrative. The unpredictability is quite refreshing with a variety of drops, rhythmic shifts and timely transitions, making for a heady production that's perfect for your mind and feet.

The EP's halfway point is marked with the slightly more progressive oriented 'In With A Chance'. More than anything though this is a vocal lead piece and a very well executed one at that. Warm and spacious, there's just enough musicality surrounding those gorgeous phrases during the break to make for several goosebump worthy moments. Add to that a deep, refined sensibility throughout and you've got a groovy, free flowing masterpiece. The release concludes with 'False Promise' which is perhaps the most haunting of the four compositions. Heady in nature and trippy in design, it's warm bass swells, ethereal overlays and evolving arps are a match made in sonic heaven, rounding out what is a very impressive artist EP from Morphing Spot. As stated at the outset, a new name to most but the future certainly looks bright for the Russian artist, with this collection more than serving notice of his unique talents. Highly recommended.
