Monojoke – End Edges [Or Two Strangers]

Antrim’s Or Two Strangers continues a strong start to the year by welcoming Monojoke back to the label for a new EP. The Polish artist first appeared on the Argentinean imprint in June of 2019 with his well received ‘Liquid Sky’ EP. The second half of the year continued with further successes, most notably a chart-topping release for Soundteller Records along with remixes for 3rd Avenue and Droid9. Now the Guy J favourite begins 2020 with his second offering for Or Two Strangers entitled ‘End Edges’.

Beginning with the peak time sensibilities of the title cut you get the feeling that Monojoke has managed to better himself once again. Effervescent and powerful, a wave of glowing synths blankets the rumbling groove as clattering percussion and playful hooks push the rhythmic narrative. Melodic yet tense, the main break introduces a cascading theme amidst a forest of effects, before a wave of drums and white noise reaches a powerful crescendo, perfectly shifting energy into an exhilarating finale.

The EP’s midway point is marked with the euphoric vibes of ‘Predictions’. Melodically driven, the first act is both smooth and enchanting, made up of powerful grooves, hazy harmonics and gaseous sweeps. Clocking in at over two minutes in length the main break sits at the emotional core of the piece, full of epic lines and blissful motifs, gradually building into a wave of melodic colour as the underbelly sizzles before segueing into a muscular third act.

Rounding out the release is ‘The Hardest Way’ which finds Monojoke exploring more joyous melodic themes. Backed by a tough and well contoured groove it’s bounce and drive quickly become infectious. Electric lines and waves of percussion offset each other nicely before the main break furthers the narrative with playful chord stabs and bassy rumblings, perfectly setting the stage for a driving finale. It rounds out a superb second project on Or Two Strangers from Monojoke, who has certainly gotten 2020 off to a great start.
