Max Averbach – Glow [Deepwibe Underground]

Max Averbach returns to Deepwibe Underground for his second artist EP. The Canadian producer first appeared on the Russian imprint in January of this year with his 'Horizon' collection. Subsequent releases for A Must Have, LuPS Records and Emotional Content have made for a strong start to the year. Now bringing his nostalgic sound back to Deepwibe Underground the Toronto resident presents his four track artist showcase 'Glow'.

Known for his classic progressive creations Max explores that ethos on the first and title cut ‘Glow’. Tough and spacey from the outset it’s powerful low end and spacious rhythms provide smooth drive, while hopeful overlays and cosmic effects fill in the framework. Dreamy arps then carry the narrative before stripping down into the main break. A quiet calm comes over the track here, drifting through a maze of textures before smoothly seguing into a driving finale. ‘Pluto’ follows with a similarly tough, punchy groove and spacey lines. Distinctive drums capture your attention as waves of effects slowly encase the framework. Punchy yet fluid, the narrative shifts further into rhythmic territory with rugged electronics and additional synth layers elevating mood into the break, before an atmospheric oasis delivers just the right amount of tension as a powerful drop sparks a strong finale.

The EPs halfway point is marked with the tranquil sounds of ‘Space’. Beginning with crisp beats and wavy arps, it’s rhythmic appeal quickly captures your imagination. Choppy percussion and a subterranean groove soon encases the framework, eventually giving way to dulcet soundscapes and a heavenly break, the latter of which hits on a profound emotional level. Rounding out the release is ‘Wondering Lights’ which continues the hypnotic mood of the collection. It’s tough, rolling groove is perfectly carved, adorned with nicely tailored percussion and more astral designs. Smooth and groovy across the first act, it eventually leads to a symphonic break where charming melodies elevate mood, before a classy peak sparks a cosmic finale. Likely the most the unique sounding creation on the collection and certainly a worthy one to cap it off. Superb stuff from Max who continues what has been a great 2020 for the Canadian artist. Highly recommended.
