Lucas Zárate & Mauro Masi – Iridescence [-102C]

Deepwibe Underground's -102C opens the new year by welcoming Lucas Zárate to the label for his first project. Hailing from Argentina, Lucas Zárate first emerged in 2022 with releases via Balkan Connection South America, Bekool Records, Droid9 South America and RYNTH. Immediately recognized for his organic and progressive sounds, the Tucumán resident would quickly earn the support of Gorje Hewek, Modd, Nick Warren and many more. Having also appeared on Deepwibe Underground's Digital division, Lucas now begins the new year on the label's organic affiliate -102C with 'Iridescence'.

The title track finds Lucas pairing with fellow countryman Mauro Masi for the lone collaboration on the release. The duo masterfully synthesizes their talents into one gorgeous organic vision that is 'Iridescence'. A tight, punchy groove and flickering percussive arrangements provide the backbone for a soulful vocal phrasing and spirited instrumentation to paint a bucolic inspired narrative. Its youthful musicality should make for an amazing mood on the dance floor, and it never drifts over the right side of cool across its concise six minute running time.

The remaining two selections find Lucas operating in solo capacity, beginning with 'One Chance'. Picking up where 'Iridescence' left off, Lucas crafts a tough, yet spacious groove with elusive bass tones and a phasing atmospheric tension. Once again, it's an array of beautiful elements which converge above the thumping groove, from brassy tones to heavenly vocal choirs and processed pianos, it's a colourful narrative which perfectly sets the stage for a full vocal reveal, one which ultimately carries the journey to a heartfelt finale.

The release concludes the nature-centric sounds of 'The Way You Loved Me'. Lucas assembles an impressive storyboard of musical motifs here, perhaps none more prominent than the primary lead which flutters it's way atop soulful vocal phrasing, vibrant plucks and perhaps the most impressive percussive arrangement on the release. A fitting conclusion to an exceptional EP, which would have to be considered Lucas' best work to date. Don't miss it.
