Lio Q – Behind My Soul [Droid9]

The latest release from Droid9 welcomes Lio Q back to the label for his debut EP. Hailing from Buenos Aires, the Argentinean artist first appeared on the US imprint in August of 2019 with a remix of Perceptual's 'Blackshape'. October saw the Buenos Aires resident return with a contribution to the label's 'ADE & Friends' collection. Also laying claim to releases on John OO Fleming’s JOOF Recordings, Auditen Music and Balkan Connection, Lio Q now lands back on Droid9 with 'Behind My Soul'.

The pure progressive sounds of the title cut lead the release off and show just how apt the Argentine is at creating groovy rhythmic concepts. It’s rolling cadence builds effortlessly across the first act, quickly becoming infectious as layers of percussion and sweeping atmospheres carry into the main break. Soulful harmonics and glowing pads add a blissful slant to the proceedings, while a brief but tension filled build sparks a powerful drop.

The release concludes with ‘Septiembre’ which is a bit more nostalgic sounding than it's predecessor. The tempo shifts down a touch but the feel good factor is palpable throughout. Funky bass stabs and mystical atmospheres immediately grab your attention, perfectly setting the stage for electric synth lines and clattering percussion. A playful lead theme beams brightly over the top, set against a hopeful backdrop, while a tranquil main break perfect resets the mood for a buoyant finale. It rounds out two stunning creations from LioQ, who continues to rise up through the progressive house landscape as 2020 begins to take shape moves. Highly recommended.
