Known as Moscow's best kept secret, Kate Ozz first came to our attention in 2021 with a release via Alex Niggemann's Soulfooled imprint. Enjoying a rapid ascent moving forward, the next two calendar years saw further successes for the Russian artist, with Disco Halal, Frau Blau and Selador being landing spots for her club friendly sound. Having made her ICONYC debut in 2022 with a remix of Mononoid's 'Running Out of Time', Kate now returns to the label with a two-track showcase entitled 'Koukou'. Selection one ‘Elusive Dreams’ sets the tone with a key changing retro-groove and driving percussive arrangements. Smooth and musical in equal measure, Kate builds drama across the first act with plucked hooks, acid-like effects and a shifting tonal lead which forges a path into the main break. Percolating acid lines play out across the interlude, nicely interwoven with the muted lead and subtlety building tension to a timeless finale. The release concludes with ‘Koukou’ which finds Kate composing with a strong sense of space. A tough, chunky groove sits at the foundation, while dancing chord stabs, haunted vocal fragments and soulful synth phrasing add bounce and drive across the first act. Proving her prowess as a supreme craftsman, the break breathes wonderfully, showcasing those lovely primary motifs and in turn adding depth and colour onwards to a elusive conclusion. It rounds out a successful ICONYC return for Kate Ozz, an artist who looks to emerge further as 2023 unfolds. Highly recommended.
