Huminal – We Dwell in the Past (Slideways Edition) [Slideways Music]

The latest from Tim Penner's Slideways Music finds the label showcasing the latest instalment of its 'Edition' series. Featured here is Huminal's excellent 'We Dwell in the Past' which was originally released on Proton Music in July of 2016. Warm, emotive and incredibly compelling it sits as the Dutch duos most exciting work to date, still holding a firm place in their Beatport top sellers over a year later. Now we see Slideways inviting two incredible artists of their own in Subandrio and Dustin Nantais to re-interpret the piece for 2017. 

Kicking the release off and making his Slideways debut is Subandrio. The Sri Lankan artist has been at the forefront of the nu-progressive movement since appearing on Cid Inc's Replug Records in 2015. It paved the way for his rugged sound, and he went on to many great successes as a result, including an appearance on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeats 3 collection later that year. A remix of Oliver Lieb's 'Caldera' (courtesy of Deersky's Soundteller Records) got 2017 off to an amazing start and Subandrio continues that great momentum with a killer rendition of 'We Dwell in the Past'. Listening to the original again, I have to say the Sri Lankan is a great choice to remix this, the character and texture of the design really lends itself to what he does and it certainly shows in the results. It's 11 minute running is immediately appealing and what a story he's crafted, effortlessly moving through velvety textures, acidic rhythms and a storyboard of cosmic effects. A lot of Subandrio's music goes pretty big but this is on a different level entirely; very heady, showing remarkable restraint with both dramatic and emotive moments highlighting the journey. There's a lot to like here so make sure to give it your full attention. 

The second and final interpretation of 'We Dwell In The Past' is provided by Dustin Nantais who is making his second appearance on the label. The Canadian artist first appeared on the Canadian imprint in March of 2015 with a remix of 'Synesthesia' by Rich Curtis and Dark Soul Project. Dustin has also found a home on Paul Hazendonk’s Manual Music and MNL imprints, having appeared a total of twenty times in the last two years. Always a consummate remixer, Dustin brings his own funky flair to 'We Dwell In The Past' adding vocal stabs, buzzing synths and clustered claps for a sure fire dance floor bomb. I've said it before and it bears mentioning here again, Dustin always brings something completely different and exciting to every remix project he takes on. This one is spectacular and it rounds out the release incredibly strong. A brilliant offering for Tim Penner's Slideways Music, one of their best this year in fact. Highly recommended.
