The Dutch duo first appeared on the US imprint in February of 2016 with a remix of ‘Obscure’ by Stergios. Subsequent releases on Einmusika and MNL have solidified Huminal as a premiere act in the progressive house underground. We now get to see a slightly different side of them with their three track offering for ICONYC entitled ‘Anger Management’. This is a release that I wish more labels would take on, seeing a talented duo like Huminal operate outside of the confines of a traditional club track is quite exciting. The title piece is quite beastly with its broken beats, smooth bass swells and crisp design. The vocal storyboard is incredibly haunting, chopped and processed to perfection, setting a dramatic, anticipatory tone before a devilish lead theme builds to a boil during the main break. Cutting edge sounds from Huminal here. The remaining two cuts equally excite, beginning with ‘Forcing Horses’ and it’s staggered, mutoid beats. Decidedly crisp and created with some heat, the electronics are just a joy to listen to. Spiralling, clustered synths and a brooding, chuggy foundation create an immense sense of space where (much like Anger Management) clever drum work dazzles the senses. The closer ‘Riding The Tricycle’ winds the EP down nicely with an excursion into fragmented beats and spacious, esoteric design. Almost cinematic or soundtracky in a way it’s the scope and vibe of the piece which is quite gripping. A great example of how to accomplish a lot without overdoing things in terms of unnecessary elements. This entire EP was a joy to listen to and props to ICONYC for showcasing all three cuts together like this. Highly Recommended.
