Formel – Funchal [ICONYC]

John Johnson's ICONYC returns welcoming Formel to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from the Netherlands, Bas van der Laken and Tom Noah make up the Formel production duo. Coming from backgrounds of progressive house and techno respectively, the duos unique fusion of styles have seen them land releases on Sasha's Last Night On Earth, Cid Inc's Replug Records, Beatfreak, Einmusika and Sincopat. Now following an EP for Paul Hazendonk's Manual Music, Formel debuts on ICONYC with 'Funchal'.

Kicking off the EP and continuing what has been a strong year for the Dutch duo is the title selection. Backed by a framework of warm beats, exotic drums and charged rhythms comes buzzing electronics and timely vocal stabs. The narrative shifts further into emotive territory as the break evolves, charming overlays, astral arps and a spoken word narrative highlight the centrepiece, before perfectly seguing into a joyous finale. Gorgeous vibes all over this one.

Rounding out the release are the deep, techno inspired vibes of ‘Isla Gorgona’. Immediately captivating, it’s spacious low end is both groovy and powerful, setting the perfect foundation for astral designs and (again) a nice complement of exotic drums. Getting progressively more spacey is the main break, where an array of esoteric synths capture your imagination, as the piece transitions into a tasteful build and smooth rush, ultimately sparking a percussive finale. It caps off a hugely successful ICONYC debut for the Dutch duo, who remain one of the underground's most intriguing acts. Highly recommended.
