Ewan Rill – Time Zone EP [Deepwibe Underground]

Deepwibe Underground welcomes Ewan Rill back to the label for a new EP. The Russian artist and Sever Records boss has been a mainstay of the progressive house underground since first appearing in 2011 with a release on Balkan Connection. Now almost a decade later he stands as one of the genre's most prolific artists, with a discography of more than 1250 credits and appearances on esteemed imprints such as Hernan Cattaneo's Sudbeat Music and Nick Warren's The Soundgarden. Now continuing what has been another great year, Ewan returns to Deepwibe Underground with 'Time Zone'.

Known for his sonic versatility, Ewan explores the deep and dark realms of progressive house on ‘Time Zone’. Undeniably groovy, it’s a seven minute journey of trippy textures, bubbly rhythms and wonderfully manicured percussion. Profoundly meditative across the first act, it's a wave of subtle modulation which peaks anticipation as the break unfolds. Muted beats and glowing atmosphere rise towards a tasteful crescendo, as the chunky groove drops for a smooth finale.

The companion piece ‘Where I Am’ carries a similar design profile to its predecessor but with a rise in tempo and intensity. Darker in tone, it’s dramatic allure is palpable, with layer upon layer of textural colour and percussive waves blanketing pulsating rhythms and warm bass swells. The combination of cosmic arps and charming melodies lies at the core of the narrative, providing a release of tension as gentle modulation pushes the sonic envelope just enough for an understated apex during the second of two breaks. Two stunning productions from Ewan which not only make for a hugely successful return to Deepwibe Underground but also further cements that he is an artist most certainly operating at a creative peak.
