Engelbert – Cosmos Descent [ICONYC]

Continuing to add fresh talent to their roster, John Johnson's ICONYC welcomes Engelbert to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from Amsterdam, Bart Balm & Bo van Veen make up the Engelbert duo who are known for dark electronic beats with high energy levels. First emerging in 2021 with an EP via WAYU Records, the duo then went on to showcase a series of self-released singles across the year. Now presenting their first release of 2022, Engelbert adds ICONYC to their resume with a two-track showcase entitled 'Cosmos Descent'.

Getting underway with 'Descent', Bart and Bo combine their extensive forces for a cosmic slice of progressive house. From its full, rippling groove comes driving percussion, liquid-like rhythms and hazy harmonics. Evolving with power and class, placid atmospheres and dubbed out chord stabs provide a colourful backdrop for a landscape of trippy effects. A majestic break sits at the heart of the journey, expansive and expertly crafted, it’s tense effervescent glow builds, as an icy drawl marries evolving effects for a commanding drop and thrilling finale.

The companion piece ‘Cosmos’ impresses with its melodic energy and elegant storyboard. Warm, full and undeniably emotive, it’s voluptuous groove and rhythmic pulses are transcendent, building momentum as Bodzin-style synths delight with their playful charm. Further saturating your pleasure centres is a magnificent break, highlighted by sentimental phrasing and colourful overlays, which unite to spearhead a suitably epic finale. It rounds out an invigorating ICONYC debut for Engelbert, setting in motion what promises to be a memorable year for the Dutch duo. Highly recommended.
