Elias Erium – Wander EP [Phenomena]

Phenomena opens the new year in style with a new EP from label boss Elias Erium. 2022 saw much success for the Canadian artist, as he set a strong precedent for the moniker, releasing eight originals, a collaboration, and a remix across a ten-month stretch. This creative swell would prove impactful, earning support from a broad range of electronic tastemakers in Adriatique, Mind Against, Nick Warren and Nicole Moudaber. Also having a breakout year as a DJ, Elias would perform at Montreal's famed Stereo Nightclub across the year, sharing the decks with Kevin de Vries, Miss Monique and Sebastian Leger. Now, as 2023 begins to take shape, Elias returns to Phenomena with a two-track showcase entitled 'Wander'.

Aimed squarely at a peak hour dance floor, EP opener 'Wander' finds Elias composing with a strong sense of space. The Canadian artist masterfully marries trance-inducing rhythms and striking percussion with punchy beats and rolling grooves. An array of haunting vocals and arpeggiated fragments unite across the first act, adding texture and depth leading into the main break. Cavernous in scope, the interlude continues to elevate tension, with fuzzed out modulation creating anticipatory moments, before a slow deliberate build eventually reveals an arcane finale.

The companion piece 'The Place Where We Are Free' lands with an equally impressive display of craftsmanship. Enticing from the start, its billowing groove excites with a monolithic pulse. Inventive percussive arrangements and astral sonics steal the air, as flashing vocals and a contemporary tonal theme take centrestage leading into the break. Emotion peaks as the interlude unfolds, with nostalgic chord changes and elastic-like bass modulation marrying for memorable moments, onwards to a heady conclusion. It rounds out two massive main room cuts from Elias Erium, which should see considerable play time across the winter season. Highly recommended.
