Edem & Govan – Ankh Remixes [Cigarette Music]

The latest release from Cigarette Music finds the label showcasing new interpretations of Edem & Govan's 'Ankh'. Originally released in July of this year, it continued what has been a strong creative partnership between the Rome residents. It’s a cohesive fusion which has been fruitful, seeing the duo receive support from some of the industries top tastemakers, most notably Sasha, John Digweed and Guy J. Now with 2019's fourth quarter in full swing the label invites Sebastian Busto, Renga Weh, Khetouin and Onetwo to reinterpret 'Ankh'.

Leading the release off is one of Argentina's finest Sebastian Busto. Widely regarded for crafting the deep and progressive spectrum’s of house, the Buenos Aires resident has long been a favourite of world class DJs Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. Also laying claim to an impressive discography of releases on Magician On Duty, Replug, Sudbeat Music and The Soundgarden, Sebastian now makes his Cigarette Music debut with a stunning interpretation of 'Ankh'. The elements from the original are gorgeous and Sebastian does a great job at re-imagining them at a club tempo. The breathy vocals and timely pianos work beautifully over a warm, robust and undeniably organic framework. Very much the sound of now for deep dreamy house, this is no doubt a mix that will also translate well on the progressive minded dance floors.

Next up is Renga Weh who delighted electronic music fans with his well received remix of Rauschhaus ft Haptic ‘Boy’ earlier this year. Released on Paul Hazendonk’s Manual Music it was played by Bog and several other trend setting DJs. Also owning releases on Astrowave, Dear Deer, DUNKELHEIT, Lauter Unfug and MONO.NOISE, the German artist now debuts on Cigarette Music with a quality remix of 'Ankh’. Opting for a spacious yet funky groove, it's a perfectly contoured foundation which sets the piece in motion. Tranquil arps and poignant tones gradually build while flurries of organic drums strike at timely moments. Stripping down into the main break the vocal gates drift over a pensive underbelly before the beats drop and warm piano stabs usher in a gorgeous final act.

The third interpretation of 'Ankh' is provided by Khetouin who also makes his label debut. After winning 3rd Avenue's Choon remix competition to close out 2018, the Australian artist has risen to new heights this year with a contribution to Sound Avenue's 'Correlation' Vol. 2 collection and a gorgeous remix of Buba's 'It Was A Dream'. Now landing on Cigarette Music, the Canberra resident turns in a stunning rendition of 'Ankh'. With a greater emphasis on the piano motifs and a fresh vocal narrative this sits as a lovely complement to it's predecessors. A meandering first act let's you drift with the dulcet tones and ghostly overlays, before gently melting down into a soulful break and thought provoking vocal. Lovely work from Khetouin.

Mexican duo Onetwo made an impressive debut on Balkan Connection in March of last year. A subsequent EP for The Purr Music followed in October to round out a successful 2018. Now presenting their first production of 2019, Onetwo turns in a groovy interpretation of 'Ankh'. Given that Hot TuneiK is one of the members you get that amazing organic feel that his productions carry. The low end is quite free and flowing, making for some lovely swing, while a chirpy stab and meditative themes build momentum. Musically less direct, the Mexican duo opt for a dubbier approach, downplaying the instrumentation of the original, while relying on less distinct concepts to translate its dreamy message to the listener.

Rounding out the release is an 'Alternative' Mix from Edem & Govan which comes in at a similar tempo to the original but with some added buoyancy and spark. Lazy and laid back in all the right ways, it's funky, acid like stabs and luminous shades and tones unite in a perfect marriage of rhythm and groove. Dreamy yet a touch melancholic it adds a reflective tone to cap off this expansive remix edition in fine style. Highly recommended.
