Dougglas & Graynard – Alhena [B4U Records]

Rising out of Colombia's burgeoning progressive music scene is B4U Records. Hailing from one of the country's mega centres in Santiago de Cali and headed up by DaBeat the label's ethos is one of free expression. Aiming to generate intense yet passionate experiences through music, it's an imprint for the people and appropriately coined B4U in relation to that very sentiment. The much anticipated first release on the label finds the mysterious new duo Dougglas & Graynard presenting their debut EP 'Alhena'.

Beginning with the title track 'Alhena' the duo explore timeless progressive house sensibilities. A warm, rolling groove gets the proceedings underway as tranquil arps and elegant atmospheres rise amidst percussive waves. Wavy motifs play off the buoyant rhythmic core as the breakdown commences. Delicate and serene in equal measure, the centrepiece flows through a bevy of heartrending electronics, perfectly setting up a musical third act that your dance floor won't soon forget.

The companion piece 'Yenah' continues with the warm, emotive ethos of the EP. A touch deeper, it's rippling low end and smooth rhythmic qualities are immediately inviting. Expansive atmospheres open up the framework as clustered claps and spiralling arps carry into the breakdown. The narrative shifts with soulful instrumentation as dusty wails and indistinct vocals intertwine with twinkly keys, before a tasteful drop sets the stage for a goosebump worthy finale. It rounds out two musical yet dance floor friendly cuts from Dougglas & Graynard who have made a statement as a duo to keep a close eye on moving forward.
