Chaum – Dyan Moon [Soundteller Records]

Deersky's Soundteller Records welcomes Chaum to the label for his debut EP 'Dyan Moon'. Born in Greece but now based in the UK, Angelos Moutsai aka Chaum has emerged in the world of progressive music since making his debut in 2016. Releases via Beat Boutique, Hoomidaas, One Of A Kind and RYNTH have been vehicles for his unique take on the genre and it's related derivatives. Now following a contribution to Mango Alley's 'Augmented 005' collection, Chaum makes his Soundteller debut with a three track showcase.

With three originals to choose from it is '19.5' which leads the release off. Smooth and inviting from the outset, it’s submerged groove, jangly motifs and colourful arps act as an intro piece in a way, building anticipation for what's to come while showcasing Chaum's explorative production chops. The second selection 'Ovate' continues on a similar meditative pulse but takes closer aim at the dance floor. Electric rhythms coupled with a machine gun style groove and firing percussion provide a lively foundation for astral sonics and mind bending effects to work their magic. Void of any overt musical theme, it's timely transitions and key changing groove provide several dynamic moments along the way, and should work nicely as a midset piece for the more adventurous DJs out there.

The release concludes with the title selection 'Dyan Moon' which ventures further into emotive territory. Played out over eight minutes, it’s warm buzzing groove, effervescent percussion and impassioned chord changes work beautifully together. Timely overlays are likely it’s strongest suit however, subtly adding emotional touches and spine-tingling moments as journey evolves, before the main break advances the narrative through tasteful modulation, as the beats drop for a reflective finale. It rounds out a huge Soundteller debut for Chaum, an artist who continues to excite progressive music fans as the year reaches it's half way mark. Highly recommended.
