BVA – 13 [Magician On Duty]

The latest release from Magician On Duty welcomes BVA to the label for his debut EP. The Russian artist first came to our attention in December of last year with a release on UFO Sound. The sublime vocals and melodic lines of 'So Sweet' perfectly set the stage for his Magician On Duty debut '13'.

Although 'So Sweet' was very much a melodic house record we get something quite different here with four organic deep house / electronica tracks that create a wonderful journey across the release. Beginning with the mysterious 'Song 13' we get a lazy, laid back groove setting the foundation for arcane vocals and soulful strums. A quirky ride out of the break showcases some wonderful artifacts and edits before the vocal narrative continues to evolve on the road home. 'Longer' picks up the tempo all while maintaining that organic, live vibe of it's predecessor. Once again it's led by a vocal that is both intriguing and esoteric, while dusty guitar hooks add just the right amount of musicality to enhance the meditative qualities of the piece. Rounding out the release are 'Love Is Over' and 'Mythology'. Both sitting in the mid tempo range much like the lead track with the former relying on a brilliant indie-esque vocal, bulbous bass stabs and more soulful instrumentation; while 'Mythology' is a tougher and more low slung in design, almost subterranean sounding on the low end in fact, perfectly offsetting the twangy motifs which carry it's musical narrative. It rounds out four inspired creations from BVA who has made his Magician On Duty debut a most memorable one. Highly recommended.
