Bondarev & Dowden – Tranquility [One Of A Kind]

Jelly For The Babies' One Of A Kind continues a strong start to the year with a new single from Bondarev & Dowden. Long regarded as one of Canada’s finest electronic music exports, Dowden has taken his progressive sound to trendsetting imprints such as Clubsonica, EDGE, , Juicebox Music, Mango Alley, Meanwhile and John OO Fleming’s Joof Recordings, while earning continued support from genre tastemakers Cid Inc, Guy J and Hernan Cattaneo. Meanwhile, Russian artist Bondarev has been a DJ for the better part of two decades, sharing the stage with some of progressive music's most iconic names, while operating as the booking manager for Saint Petersburg's famed WARPP Club. As a producer, Bondarev first emerged in 2017 with a release via Crossings, a project which would lead to key discography credits courtesy of aboriginal, Mango Alley, Proton's Particles and most recently via WARPP's label, where he operates as the A&R. Now, combining their extensive forces for the first time, Bondarev & Dowden present their debut collaboration 'Tranquility', alongside remixes from Ruben Karapetyan, Alan Cerra and Hot Tuneik.

The original mix finds Bondarev and Dowden sticking to the pure progressive sound for which they are known. Warm spacious grooves and spongy beats provide the backbone for tranquil atmospheres, vibrant percussive arrangements and striking stabs to push energy into the main break. Looking to bring greater drama, a devilish arp rises to prominence across the break, elevating mood and tension, before a thunderous drop spearheads a chugging finale.

There are also three remixes included which add depth and variety to the release, beginning with Ruben Karapetyan. Opting for a fuller, more melodic approach the Los Angeles resident makes great use of the vocal stabs and overall atmospheric disposition of the original, while adding a swing heavy groove and several interwoven arps which ultimately make for a colourfully emotive conclusion.

Continuing with another one of progressive music's nubreeds, Alan Cerra returns to the label with a typically sensational version. The Argentinean artist takes a cue from the original and reshapes the groove for some added funk, while focusing on a more atmospheric narrative. Timely chord changes across the break provide an impassioned response, as delicate keys and a flurry of drums lead to an epic finale.

The third and final remix finds Hot Tuneik providing a deeper and dubbier take on the track. Fresh off the release of his 'Awaken' album, the Mexican artist brings his familiar groovy sound, with dark but organic synth elements and an interesting array of textural colour adding depth across the nine minute journey. Amazing music from everyone involved here, making for a must have release from Bondarev, Dowden and One Of A Kind. Highly recommended.
