Ryan Sullivan – Dusty / Hole [Triplefire Music]

The latest from Triplefire Music finds label boss Ryan Sullivan back in the spotlight with a brand new EP. The South African artist has been a staple in his country’s nightlife for over a decade. Long regarded as one of his region’s most creative talents, Ryan’s latest double a-side ‘Dusty / Hole’ promises to be his best yet and arrives just in time for the summer festival season.

It’s been almost a year since Ryan’s last release so these tracks are met with much anticipation. The aptly titled ‘Dusty’ leads the release off with a deep and dubby vibe. The pairing of character rich sound design and smooth meditative flow works amazingly well across the seven minute journey. The dusty, tape quality feel of the production is a refreshing change from today’s over processed sound and makes for multiple enjoyable listens, this could set a killer mood in any room or work as late night burner as well.

With a similar sonic profile the companion piece ‘Hole’ sits as a lovely complement. This is a story told over a bed of broken beats however and what a wonderful shuffle they have. Blanketed with richly textured, complex rhythm structures, it’s cadence is something you get locked into quickly. Although quite indistinct, vocals play a huge role in the narrative, complemented by grainy effects and ultimately leading to a swirling blend of sonic decay before a tasteful drop seals it’s brilliance. This is a stunning track and quite a few top names have taken notice already with support from Ame, Sasha, John Digweed, Petar Dundov, YokoO and more, it’s definitely a release which belongs in your collection. Highly recommended.
