Alex O’Rion – Rubicon EP [ICONYC]

Alex O’Rion returns to John Johnson’s ICONYC imprint this week with ‘Rubicon’. In addition to appearances on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music the Dutch artist has become a staple on the roster of the US imprint with this being his sixth appearance. Always a regular in Beatport’s Progressive House charts, Alex now returns to ICONYC with two of his most anticipated productions to date.

Bettering yourself with each successive outing is no easy feat but Alex seems to find a way to one up his previous work time and time again. ‘Rubicon’ is a perfect example of that and is already a favourite amongst some of the industry's foremost tastemakers. The DJ friendly intro alone is quite captivating with an array of wispy atmospherics and fresh effects creating an air of anticipation. Then comes the warm, fluid waves of bass and you’re effortlessly taken away into a melodic wonderland. Subtle yet powerful, it’s spacious lead line plays off some lovely low end modulation for a string of magic moments, eventually leading to a gorgeous third act finale.

The companion piece ‘Linn’ proves to be the perfect complement as it sits in a similar sonic space. Once again the low end is beautifully contoured and with maximum warmth and roundness it really is a joy to listen to. A fuller spectrum of melodies dominates the top end here but the narrative to get there is one of perfect storytelling. Lightly teased over the first act and evolving during the main break before reaching exhilarating heights in the home stretch, this one has goosebump moments written all over it. Two stunning cuts that any true progressive house aficionado will certainly cherish in their collection for years to come. Highly Recommended.
