Progressive Astronaut caught up with Mattisix to learn more about the release of 'Happy Day', his background, electronic music in Belgium, DJing and much more. Enjoy Hi Mattisix, thanks for talking to us today. How has the first half of the year been for you? And please tell us something interesting about your day today? The first half of the year has been exciting and productive. I've been working on a new live set using two Elektron machines—the Digitakt and Digitone—and a Prophet Rev2 desktop version. These machines' limitations actually inspire creativity. Today, I spent time in 'the lab,' my home studio, tweaking sounds and sequences on the Digitone. It's amazing how these constraints can lead to new ideas and sounds. What’s a piece of music (not your own) from 2023 that had the biggest impact on you, and what makes it outstanding for you? A track that really impacted me is 'Rebirth' (Antony Toga Early Morning Remix). The track evolves beautifully over its 8-minute runtime, keeping you engaged throughout. The production is top-notch, with a clean mix and clear separation of elements. The bassline is warm and driving, and the use of sidechain compression is masterful, allowing the kick to punch through. The stereo imaging creates an immersive soundstage, and the smooth transitions maintain a perfect balance between tension and release. It's an inspiring example of meticulous electronic music production. What was the music genre you discovered first before you turned to electronic music, and what made you continue with the latter? I first discovered rock music, with bands like Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, and Deep Purple laying the foundation for my musical journey. However, as I explored more genres, I found the limitless possibilities within electronic music irresistible. The ability to combine my guitar playing with electronic elements opened up a new world of creativity for me. The guitar can give a special taste to some 'static' electronic grooves. So touching on that, you played in rock, jazz, and trip hop bands before venturing into electronic music in solo capacity, how did your musical past influence how you produce electronic music? My experiences with rock, jazz, and trip hop bands taught me the art of blending different sounds. Jazz helped me understand complex harmonies and improvisation, while trip hop introduced me to atmospheric textures. These influences are evident in my electronic music, where I strive to create a rich, layered sound. Looking back on your time performing with a band, what gig would you say holds the fondest memories for you and why? Performing at Botanique in Brussels with my jazz funk band was unforgettable. The energy from the crowd was electric, and we were in perfect sync that night. It was a moment where everything clicked, and the connection with the audience was magical. Take us through a typical day when you’re not traveling, what does a day in your life look like? A typical day involves a mix of creative and routine activities. I start my day with morning prayers and meditation. If I don’t have to give lessons at school—I have some teaching hours—I head to 'the lab' to work on new music, often starting with a guitar riff or piano chord. Afternoons are for meetings or learning new techniques. Evenings might be spent preparing sets or unwinding with friends. I also spend time with my kids and family, keeping my day quite busy and balanced. Talk to us about where you are from and how growing up there influenced your journey into electronic music. I’m originally from Sardinia, Italy, but grew up in Brussels. The multicultural environment of Brussels greatly influenced my music, blending various sounds and genres much like the diverse cultures I was exposed to. This melting pot of influences inspired me to create music that fuses jazz, blues, and funk with electronic beats. Who else from your home country inspired you when you first discovered electronic music? And what was it about their DJing or production which led you to pursue it yourself? I’m not a DJ, but a musician. I’m deeply inspired by artists like Stephan Bodzin and Rodriguez Jr., who blend electronic music with live performances. Their ability to create intricate, emotional soundscapes while performing live sets is truly inspiring. It shows how electronic music can be as dynamic and expressive as any traditional genre, which motivates me to continuously work on my own abilities and craft. You have a new single ‘Happy Day’ out now via Deed Music, tell us about the release and how the tracks showcase your current sound. Happy Day' reflects my vision of music, which is all about spreading happiness. I’m happy when creating music, and I’m happy sharing it with others. The track combines upbeat electronic beats with melodic guitar riffs, aiming to convey a sense of joy and positivity. I hope that listeners feel this happiness and energy when they hear it. This release showcases my blend of electronic and organic elements, staying true to my sound and ethos. I’m curious which one of the tracks have gotten the most play in your sets and how has the reaction been so far? Broken Stage' has been a standout in my sets. The audience’s reaction has been fantastic, with people dancing and really connecting with the positive energy of the track. It’s rewarding to see my music resonating with the crowd, especially when they see me soloing on the dance floor with my guitar. Let our readers inside your studio for a moment, what is your current setup and what studio tools are featured heavily in writing the ‘Happy Day’ EP? In 'the lab,' my home studio, I always start with my instruments or machines, like my Digitakt, Digitone, and Prophet Rev2. I focus on sound design first and only open my DAW, Ableton Live or Logic Pro X, once I'm satisfied with the sound assembly. These tools help me finalize my work by recording, mixing, and cleaning up the tracks. However, my primary focus is always on crafting and perfecting sounds with my instruments before moving to the digital workspace. Deed Music is a label you’ve had a relationship with since 2022, this being your third release with them now, what makes the label such a good home for your music? Deed Music is now my family. From the beginning, Iman, the director, has shown immense support and encouragement. For the first time, I felt respected as an artist. In today’s music industry, this kind of respect is rare. I believe everyone should have this positive attitude because if you spread love, kindness, and respect, that same energy comes back to you. Deed Music's genuine passion for music and artistry, rather than chasing social media trends, nurtures real talent and supports slow, organic growth. I feel truly honored to be part of the Deed Music family. You are also a DJ as I see you have an organic set on your Soundcloud, so please tell us your approach to DJing, and how your podcast sets might differ from playing in a club. I love music, and sometimes I enjoy DJing. I take the time to select original and unique tracks, avoiding more commercial ones. In my live sets, I like to create original remixes of popular songs by using only the acapella and reworking everything entirely. This approach allows me to imprint the Mattisix style on my mixes, ensuring they are distinctive and original. Whether in a club or a podcast, my goal is to deliver a fresh, unique listening experience. Where do you source the majority of music for your sets? Is it primarily from producer friends or promo mailouts at this point? I believe listening to music extensively is essential in the music industry, especially for DJs. Relying on charts and promotions is lazy and uninspired. I follow my own taste and feelings, diving deep into long listening sessions to discover new music and sounds. To the younger DJ generation: don't take shortcuts. Spend time learning and exploring. Relying solely on popular trends or promo mailouts dilutes creativity. True artistry comes from a commitment to discovering and understanding music on a deeper level. How much prep do you put into the sets you play, or are they spontaneous for the most part? I want to be sincere—I work extensively on my music and prepare my live sets thoroughly to ensure I know where I’m going during the performance. However, I keep a significant part of the set open for improvisation, as it’s crucial to respond spontaneously to the crowd’s energy. If everything is pre-recorded, it's not a live set—it's a fake live set. Unfortunately, I see a lot of fake live sets around. My goal is to maintain authenticity and deliver a truly live experience. If you could set up an event with a line-up of five artists of your choice, who would you book and what set times would you ascribe to the artists? I'd book all the hardworking artists I've connected with, especially those struggling to get opportunities. Jorge, known as Ferrela, is a friend and talented musician I'd love to see perform at a major event. My goal is to feature artists who haven’t been booked regularly but have something special to offer. Today’s algorithms and big-name bookings dominate the scene, making it hard for new talents to shine. We need alternative parties to showcase fresh, unique music and give these artists a chance to be discovered. Current top five tracks in your sets? As I mentioned, I perform live DJ sets where I rework tracks I love into unique Mattisix-style versions. Currently, my top five tracks are: Nirvana - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' London Grammar - 'Hey Now' Everything But The Girl - 'Missing' Stromae - 'Papaoutai' Radiohead - 'Street Spirit' Each track is completely reworked to create a distinctive sound. Come and listen to my original live DJ set to experience these tracks in a whole new way. If you are not DJing, producing, or socializing at clubs, where do**18. If you are not DJing, producing, or socializing at clubs, where do we find you? And doing what? I have a family that I prefer to keep private to protect them from social media. When I’m not in 'the lab,' I spend time with them. Additionally, I work as a religion teacher at a college in Brussels. Teaching gives me mental stability because working with teenagers requires authenticity—they don’t tolerate fake adults. This balance between music and teaching helps me stay grounded and true to myself. If you were not a DJ/Producer what do you think you’d be doing with your life? (Something not music related.) I'm happy being a part-time teacher, but I'll always be a musician—it's something innate. I'm a creative person, and making music and art is a necessity for me, not about fame. Currently, I'm also working on music productions for other artists who have asked me to produce their new albums. Creativity is a natural part of who I am, and I'll always find ways to express it, whether through teaching or producing music for others. What’s something we do not know about you? I like to keep my personal life private and avoid using it to gain curiosity or sympathy. For example, when I was 5, my mother died tragically, but I’ve always kept that to myself. On a lighter note, I have a passion for cooking and experimenting with new recipes. I’m also a big football fan and a devoted supporter of Juventus. These hobbies, along with my creative work in music, help keep my life balanced and fulfilling. What are some of your favourite TV series? Both all-time and recently, what have you been enjoying lately? I'm completely addicted to a new series called 'Dark Matter.' It's incredibly engaging with a gripping storyline and complex characters. The blend of science fiction and mystery keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the plot twists are mind-blowing. The show's exploration of parallel universes and the moral dilemmas faced by the characters make it a thought-provoking and thrilling watch. It’s really awesome and has quickly become one of my all-time favorites. Apart from music, what makes you happiest? In today's world, people often keep their faith private to avoid offending others, but I want to share mine because it gives me strength. I’m a Christian, a Catholic, and I pray and meditate regularly. Life can be tough, with depression and anxiety always lurking. My faith helps me through these challenges and brings me peace. I believe everyone needs to care for their soul, and my faith is a big part of my happiness. What does the remainder of 2024 hold for you? Do you have a second release coming out anytime soon? I'll be spending some time in Italy, meeting musicians, and playing in clubs. I'm working on a new EP with three tracks. I'm quite productive, composing 5-6 tracks per month—I'm like a machine. Deed Music is organizing events in Berlin, Luxembourg, and Barcelona where I'll perform live. I'm also planning live sets in London. I'm very excited about these opportunities and hope to see you there! 'Happy Day' is available now via Deed Music: https://tinyurl.com/5cx3uhvt
