Hailing from the progressive house hotbed of Argentina, Juan Sapia has enjoyed much success since first emerging in 2017. As a favourite of progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, the Buenos Aires resident has compiled an impressive resume, landing releases via EDGE, Mango Alley, Or Two Strangers, Sudbeat Music and The Soundgarden. Having made his pad debut in 2020 with a contribution to the label's inaugural compilation release 'Exoplanet', Juan now returns to the label for his debut EP 'Dancing Clowns'. Opener and title selection ‘Dancing Clowns’ is an apt barometer of where Juan’s headspace is at, as he lets exotic drums and driving percussion descend over punchy beats and rolling grooves. Spacey sonics expand the narrative across the first act, bringing with them otherworldly vibes, before a cinematic-style break perfectly sets up a driving finale. The second selection 'Last Jedi' follows suit with a similar percussive feel and smooth retro-groove. A mesmerizing dance floor journey enhanced by lively melodies, fluttery sonics and sweeping effects, the latter of which provides a bridge into the main break. Its cosmic nature seems to be something Juan relishes in, as the Buenos Aires resident continues to flex his free-thinking muscles, and in turn nails that rare compositional balance of melody and groove across a smooth finale. The release's final selection 'The Core' follows a slightly darker monochrome and in turn provides balance and variety to the EP. Billowing basslines and striking stabs stand out across the first movement, before giving way to cascading arps and a shimmering break which perfectly preludes a heads down finale. A much-needed dance floor curveball for the more adventurous DJs out there and an excellent production to cap off the release in fine style. Highly recommended.
