Nik Nazarov – Magdalena [Soundteller Records]

The latest release from Deersky's Soundteller Records welcomes Nik Nazarov to the label for his debut single. The Russian artist has earned the praise of Guy J, John Digweed and Nick Muir over the course of his six-year career, while releases on Balkan Connection, Electronic Tree and Stellar Fountain sit prominently in his discography. Now making his first appearance on Soundteller Records Nik presents his latest studio creation ‘Magdalena’ alongside remixes from Christian Monique and Gux Jimenez.

Beginning with the original mix Nik works neatly detailed percussion over a bed of manicured beats and undulating bass. Distinctive stabs pierce the air as hazy atmospheres begin to drift, creating an air of anticipation as effervescent arps and ghostly sweeps fill in the framework. The narrative then evolves into a charming break which sits at the core of the piece. Deep and emotional, it's warm chord changes and haunting refrains set the stage for a classy build and hypnotic finale.

The first interpretation of 'Magdalena' is provided by Christian Monique who returns to the label for his second appearance. May of last year saw the Italian artist make his Soundteller debut with a well received remix of Nishan Lee's 'Ritual'. A prolific start to 2020 has seen Christian showcase his music on Another Life, Balkan Connection and Transensations Records. Now following a remix for Estribo Records, the Italian artist returns to Soundteller with a well crafted interpretation of 'Magdalena'. Its drive quickly becomes infectious, propelled by a full, rolling groove and clattering percussion. Ominous pads rise off in the distance, while alien-like effects add to it's trippy core. The main break continues to elevate mood with wavering atmospherics, warm chord changes and disorienting arps, before ultimately shifting energy into a driving final movement.

Rounding out the release and providing the second and final interpretation of 'Magdalena' is Gux Jimenez. The Colombian artist first appeared on the Polish imprint in October of 2019 with a contribution to the label’s ‘ADE Sampler’. The Cartagena resident then quickly followed that up with his 'Adair' EP in December. Also showcasing his music on Balkan Connection, Clubsonica Records, Droid9 and Strangers Beats, Gux now makes a welcome return to Soundteller for his first remix. Adding more of a modern vibe, Gux reshapes the groove into something much more free flowing, while electric arps and swing heavy percussion fill in the framework. The main theme translates nicely, sitting gently under the surface, before opening up into a well crafted band of modulation across the main break. Tense yet exhilarating, the centrepiece is incredibly striking, laced with a stunning array of artifacts and effects, as it peaks with a fiery build and murky drop. Brilliant work from Gux once again which caps off a very well rounded release from Soundteller Records. Highly recommended.
