Guy J – Beast Of Sea [Lost & Found]

Lost & Found enters the heart of the summer season with a new EP from label boss Guy J. The Israeli born, Malta based artist began the year with his 'Day Of Light / Mind Of' double a-side release. Uniquely emotional and bound with creative flashes, it was yet another unforgettable offering from an artist who somehow continues to better himself with each successive release. Guy's latest and highly anticipated 'Beast of Sea' once again serves notice that his inventive forces continue to operate on a remarkable level.

Having been a highlight of Guy's sets for some time, it is the devilish wonder 'Beast of Sea' which gets the EP underway. Rhythmically fluid, it’s chugging low end, swing heavy cadence and finely tuned percussive set the piece on a course for maximum sensory stimulation. Spastic synths and metallic effects steal the air at opportune moments, before melting down into a mind bending break. Backed by a sizzling underbelly, heavily processed artifacts trail across the cavernous interlude, building copious amounts of tension as the beats drop for a driving finale. Definitely a tune to light up your dance floor.

Rounding out the release is 'Catfish' which finds Guy drifting closer to emotive territory. Perhaps an ideal complement to it's meaner counterpart this is a sleek meditative journey to get lost in. From its full, rippling groove comes wispy effects and placid arps. There's a hypnotic allure which is very rare here and it's something that plays out over a short but impactful break, effortlessly rising with subtle modulation as a wave of noise and striking vocal stab cue a swirling finale. Looking back at 2019, electronic music fans were treated to two releases from Guy, 'Synthopia' and the Clarian collaboration 'Night Rescue'. With two EPs already in the books for 2020, might we see a third Guy J project before years end? If not, the enlightening sounds of 'Catfish' sit as the perfect piece to leave us all wanting more.
