Based in Tel Aviv, the Israeli artist has been a fixture of the electronic underground for over a decade. Whether operating as one half of the famed crossover act Weekend Heroes, or under his solo moniker of DJ Zombi, Eli Baltsan is well travelled, having curated music for the world’s premiere festivals and trendiest venues. With a renewed focus on his solo productions in recent years, DJ Zombi has found a home on Cid Inc’s Replug Records, Guy J’s Armadillo Records, Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank Records and his own Beat Boutique imprint. Now making his much anticipated Or Two Strangers debut, DJ Zombi presents ‘Ninja’ alongside a remix from Mariano Mellino & John Cosani. DJ Zombi’s affinity for combining rhythm and melody has never been more profound than on ‘Ninja’. Anchored by a warm, chunky groove and exotic drums, it’s a production that flows through a myriad of mystical motifs. Highly dramatic throughout, fragmented synths and cascading keys converge for dynamic moments across the first act. Tasteful modulation and emotive chord changes bring the narrative to full fruition as the main break evolves, before melting away into a gentle build and groovy finale. The release concludes with Mariano Mellino & John Cosani providing the lone interpretation of ‘Ninja’. The Argentinean duo have been occasional studio partners in the past with joint productions released courtesy of Beat Boutique and Movement Recordings. Having found favour with progressive music tastemakers Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, Mariano and John also lay claim to solo offerings care of Replug Records and Sudbeat Music. Now making their collaborative debut on Or Two Strangers, the duo put an inspired twist on ‘Ninja’. Atop a warm, full bodied groove comes effervescent effects and neatly tailored percussion. Emerging atmospheres cue fragments of the lead motif, phasing in and out of coherence, before eventually striking during a cavernous break. It’s a remarkable sonic marriage and one which perfectly segues into a smooth, meditative final movement. A classy remix from Mariano and John, which caps off a must have Or Two Strangers debut for DJ Zombi.
