Th;en – Perikon [ICONYC]

ICONYC stalwarts Th;en return to the label in a major way with 'Perikon' alongside remixes from Betoko and Kaiser Souzai. Now a cross continental duo, this German / Canadian production team has already racked up numerous discography highlights in 2019, none more impressive than their remix of 'Evidence' by Stil & Bense. Also coming courtesy of ICONYC, the track was selected as one of WMC's top progressive house productions by Beatport, while also enjoying an extended stay in the charts. Now returning to the label for their first single of the year Th;en unveil the much anticipated 'Perikon'.

The amalgamation of progressive house and techno has continued to be an inspired trend but very few excel at it quite like Th;en. 'Perikon' not only sits comfortably cross genre but also carries a remarkable funkiness. It’s rugged low end rolls forward with remarkable swing while smart tonal themes and clattering drums sit in a perfect sonic marriage. The addition of deep bass swells and a quirky yet oddly emotive lead make for a memorable break, paving the way for a tasteful drop which perfectly shifts energy into a groovy finale.

The first interpretation of ‘Perikon’ is provided by Betoko who makes his label debut. The London based artist continues to be one of the melodic house scenes most tried and tested remixers, having racked up a remarkable number of discography credits, most notably for BeatFreak Recordings, Einmusika and Suara. Now fresh off a remix for Rule Music, Betoko lands on ICONYC with an inspired rendition of 'Perikon'. Opting for a deeper more esoteric approach has worked wonders and sits as a perfect complement to the original. Rugged and rippling in equal measure, the low end immediately grabs your attention, while grainy percussion and a clean take on the lead theme sit in stark contrast. A unique and creative remix from Betoko.

The release concludes with Kaiser Souzai also making his label debut and providing the second and final interpretation of 'Perikon'. The Berlin resident has also made a sizable impression on the progressive techno scene with standout releases on BeatFreak Recordings, Parquet, Sprout and his Ballroom Records imprint. Now following an EP for Transmit Recordings earlier this month, Kaiser makes his ICONYC debut with a powerful interpretation of 'Perikon'. Melodic and groovy in equal measure it’s a mix that stays true to the main themes from the original while adding a fuller, warmer feel, particularly in the low end. The break and final act show Kasiser's keen sense of dance floor dynamics, with all the tension and anticipation you could ever want, executed with a subtle build and classy drop which keeps the vibe on the right side of cool. A wicked remix from Kaiser which caps off another stunning release from John Johnson's ICONYC, who continue to make a massive impression this year. Highly recommended.
