The second release on Salt Records finds label bosses 2 Reels returning for a new single. Following their well received first release 'Whistle in the Wind', the Los Angeles duo now present the much anticipated 'Pass It Down' alongside remixes from Brent Lawson, Innerstate and Naughty G.

Chris Grim and Ethan Healthcote make up 2 Reels production team and provide two versions of 'Pass It Down' here. The original mix comes in deep and techy with a lovely atmospheric resonance. Rolling percussion and nicely layered beats make for a smooth yet buoyant cadence across the first act, before hypnotic arps continue to elevate mood. Simple yet effective, it's a chain of nostalgic chord changes combined with timely modulation that offers the magic here, ultimately leading to a meditative finale. Meanwhile the 2 Reels Bogart Mix comes in a bit tougher and more melodic, making it an ideal complement to it's predecessor. A bevy of memorably hooks run through this one and it's slightly wonky feel makes it ideal for a large room.

Pro-B-Tech boss Brent Lawson provides the first remix following his 'Cognitive Behaviour' single from March of this year. The UK artist delivers a darker progressive minded rework here, complete with amazing flow and several impactful moments. The afro-tinged drums are a nice touch but it's the the track's subversive emotion which ultimately wins you over. Quite dark and serious in tone yet incredibly uplifting, a unique contrast from the Pro-B-Tech label boss.

Next up Frank Prosnik and Jason Timothy Ward aka Innerstate make their label debut and provide the second interpretation of 'Pass It Down'. Well known for their 90's hit 'Sidewinder' which was played Sasha, John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo, the duo have not worked together in some time but have specially reunited to remix 'Pass It Down'. Clocking in at just over eleven minutes the duo craft a tough yet meditative journey full of cosmic qualities and a great nose for the dance floor. Sweeping noise and a nasally acid line highlight the second act, before melting down into a break of heady harmonics to cap off the piece in style.

Rounding out the release is another progressive house veteran in Naughty G. A member of the Sasha camp for some time, Gaetan Schurrer aka Naughty G worked on the first Northern Exposure compilation while also collaborating with BT, Rowan Blades and Barry Jamieson. Currently heading up the Perth symphony orchestra, Gaetan has come out of retirement specially for this remix. Perhaps the furthest departure from the original, Naughty G carves out a foundation of tight breakbeats and crisp acid lines, all while working in the main melodic motifs over the top. Hugely nostalgic, this does feel like something Sasha & Digweed would have dropped in Twilo when progressive breaks were likely at their pinnacle. A hugely creative remix from Naughty G and what a way to round out a fabulous second offering from Salt Records. Highly recommended.
