Starkato – Black Lotus EP [Beatfreak Limited]

D-Formation's Beatfreak Limited imprint returns this week welcoming Starkato to the label for his debut EP. Having appeared on parent label Beatfreak Recordings with sometime studio partners Th;en, the German artist now debuts on the Limited division with 'Black Lotus'.

Starkato has been widely regarded by progressive house fans for some time. In addition to Beatfreak he's showcased his music on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat and Lonya's Asymmetric Recordings. 'Black Lotus' proves to be one of his most mature works to date with a 'progressive sound of now' that delivers in a massive way. Backed by a warm, fluid groove it's tightly knit arps and detailed percussion bring a fiery energy to the piece. Buzzing synths soon rise to prominence; rough, rugged and loaded with character they play off the pristine arp all throughout the centrepiece before eventually getting washed away for a meditative transition back to the powerful groove. 'Cheap Tricks' is equally brilliant with its infectious pulse and catchy lead line. Acidic in nature, it's nasally character quickly floods your senses before a tranquil break provides just the right emotion to elevate the mood for a purring finale. The release concludes with 'Unstuck In Time' which proves to be the most emotive of the three cuts. Based around a choppy, deliberate groove it's a creation to send people home with a smile. It’s evolving storyboard is perhaps it’s strongest suit as tonal themes lift the vibe higher before a well crafted break allows for reflective moments that perfectly prelude a poignant final act. A perfect way to cap off a superb collection of music from Starkato who continues to be one of the progressive scenes most exciting talents. Highly recommended.
