Afterglow Records gets 2019 underway in style with a new single from label artist Gai Barone. The Italian producer has had a remarkable ten year career. Regarded by fans and contemporaries as a master melodic craftsman, Gai continues to deliver some of the most emotive music that the electronic underground has to offer. His unique style has left him in a place unfamiliar to most artists and that’s with a sound all his own. One that incorporates a cross pollinated blend of styles which ultimately fits under the progressive music umbrella. Fresh off a superb remix of Stereo Underground’s 'Flashes’, Gai now lands back on Afterglow with ‘When The Swallows Come Back Home’ alongside a remix from Quivver.

Beginning with the original mix we find Gai in fine form with a production that is both energetic and emotive. Setting the foundation is a tough, punchy groove full of inviting yet deliberate drive, while unprecedented warmth comes in the form of arpeggiated clusters and bulbous bass swells. Playful in nature and organic in design, it’s a joyous creation where the sum of its parts far exceeds expectations. This ultimately is what great producers do, somehow manage to get the most out of just a few key and highly memorable motifs, where unique character and profound emotion is at premium. A timeless piece of music from Gai Barone.

The lone interpretation is provided by John Graham aka Quivver who makes his label debut here. The UK artist has remarkably remained in electronic music’s elite for well over two decades. Upon forging a long standing relationship with John Digweed’s Bedrock Records, John has also added nicely to his portfolio in recent years with releases on Selador, Stil Vor Talent, Tronic and his own Controlled Substance imprint. Now beginning 2019 on a strong note, Quivver provides a fresh take on ‘When The Swallows Come Back Home’. There is nothing like a Quivver groove, after all these years there’s still a distinctive swing and cadence that no one has been able to replicate. The UK artist provides some grit with a more rugged foundation and dirty stabs taking centre stage, as astral effects and bands of tension drift in and out of the framework. Aimed squarely at the dance floor the main themes have been deconstructed into something which is highly rhythmic and full of anticipatory vibes, the latter of which gets fulfilled with timely drops and dynamic yet fluid transitions. A masterful remix from John which is undoubtedly headed to the top of Beatport’s progressive house tracks chart. It caps off what is a superb and well rounded release for Afterglow to usher in the new year. Highly recommended.
