Felix E, Michael Ritter – Tagträume [Kamai Music]

Felix E and Michael Ritter collaborate on a melodic house/techno release called Tagträume, which is distinct and captivating due to its use of spoken word vocals and immersive atmosphere.

The two-track release comes via Jacob Groening's Kamai Music, which is a record label that leans towards mid-tempo tracks with melodic grooves and organic sounds. This release is a little bit more electric than some of the label’s output, but it stays true to the tempo and deep atmosphere that is at the core of its sound.

Both of the artists behind this release are based in Berlin, Germany. The duo often collaborates together, but also work individually, either as solo artists or with others. Felix E has contributed to record labels ranging from Lump Records to Cafe De Anatolia, and Michael Ritter has featured tracks and remixes on imprints such as Obenmusik, Mango Alley and Daydreaming. Working together, Felix E and Michael Ritter have released music via Discotexas, Minds Alike, Reconsider Music, Kiosk ID, and many others of equal note.

“Tagträume” is the opening track, and it’s got a booming low-end that’s anchored by a solid kick drum and rumbling bassline. Juddering melody stabs cut through the dark atmospherics, but it’s the intimacy or the spoken word vocal that makes it stand out. It’s got a melodic groove due to the swelling pads, but it’s stripped back to the point where it’s almost minimal techno.

“Eklat” is the second of the tracks, and it is another stripped back cut, but it’s built around synths and pads rather than a vocal, although there is an atmospheric breath sample that adds to its soothing atmosphere. Delicate piano chords give it an introspective vibe, adding to the soothing flow of the pads and energising percussion.
