Luigi Gori & Larsun Hesh – Gray Day [Phenomena]

Solid Stone's Phenomena imprint ushers in the fall season by welcoming Luigi Gori and Larsun Hesh to the label for their debut EP. Hailing from Arezzo, Italy, Luigi Gori has a long history in electronic music. Famed for his Presslab Boys moniker, his cutting edge productions found a home on Crosstown Rebels, Viva Music and Satoshi Tommie's now defunct SAW Recordings. Now working under his given name, Luigi partnered up with German artist Larson Hesh in 2017. The duo's creative synergy was evident immediately, with their debut collaborations finding a home on Click Records and Dear Deer. Now following a contribution to Beatfreak's 'Beatroom' Vol. 2 collection, the duo make their much anticipated debut on Phenomena with 'Gray Day'.

The duo's journey into deep, mystical techno continues with the title track. Anchored by a hypno-infused groove and sultry rhythmic structures, it's a piece that builds through a variety of dramatic motifs. Ethereal synths and astral effects continue to tantalize the senses as the atmosphere thickens towards the second act. A tension filled break advances the narrative with dusty sweeps and brooding overlays, before alien-like transmissions shift energy into an exhilarating conclusion. The companion piece 'Liam' finds the duo exploring the darker realms of their studio repertoire. It's punchy groove is adorned with feathered sonics, firing drums and a fresh rhythmic theme which pushes the momentum forward. It's evolving narrative builds a delicate tension as layers of percussion converge, before a series of metallic designs drops in for what should be a magic moment on a clued up dance floor.

The lone interpretation of 'Gray Day' is provided by STAB Virus who are also making their label debut. Hailing from South Africa, Siphe Tebeka and Makonwabe Bekwa make up the STAB Virus production duo. Upon making their debut in 2015, STAB Virus quickly landed on Suara where they were remixed by label boss Coyu. Appearances on KATERMUKKE and Senso Sounds soon followed, ultimately leading to their Phenomena debut with a cosmic techno interpretation of 'Gray Day'. Anchored by a crunchy, rippling groove and rhythmic waves it sits as a peak time complement to the more subversive original. A tension filled break is one of many highlights, with its gloomy, cinematic flair and methodical build ending in a trail of sonic decay which ultimately sparks an electric re-entry. It rounds out a stunning Phenomena debut from Luigi Gori and Larsun Hesh, who appear to be on the cusp of big things as their creative synergy grows.
