Vanishing Point – Apocalypsis [ICONYC]

The latest from John Johnson’s ICONYC imprint finds Vanishing Point making their label debut with ‘Apocalypsis’. Coming off a March release for label affiliate NYLO, the Spanish duo have also found a home on Armada and No Definition. Although perhaps best known for their Nu-Disco productions, Vanishing Point now step up to ICONYC with a more progressive minded creation, accompanied by remixes from TH;EN & Las Von and Ziger.

Pairing two of progressive music’s most highly touted new artists is always an exciting prospect. Hailing from Germany and Canada respectively, TH;EN & Las Von more than fit that ideology. While owning a collective discography with releases on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music, Beatfreak Recordings and Somatic Records, this highly creative trio now comes together for their first ever remix collaboration on ICONYC. Driving, deliberate and devilishly trippy, it’s a cross pollinated construction, effortlessly melding progressive house and techno. Dynamic and punchy at the outset, hypnotic arps and gnarly stabs fill in the framework, as mounds of bass power forward with meditative drive. The one minute interlude proves to be timely, resonating with incandescent themes and elevating the mood before waves of sonic decay set up a classy yet powerful drop. An electric moment for both the mind and feet.

The second and final interpretation of ‘Apocalypsis’ is provided by Ziger who returns to the label for his second appearance. The Greek artist owns a well kept discography with appearances on Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat Music and Guy Mantzur’s Plattenbank Records. He’s stayed true to the progressive house sound since his debut in 2009 and has become one of Greece’s most recognized artists as a result. Now making a welcome return to ICONYC he remakes ‘Apocalypsis’ in his own inimitable style. The rhythmic groove immediately grabs your attention as perfectly contoured bass and detailed percussion bring waves of energy. The main break reveals enchanting motifs, marvellously offset with electric stabs, before expertly building to an exhilarating finale. Definitely some goosebump moments in the making on this one.

The release concludes with the original mix which finds Vanishing Point spreading their creative wings. Imminently powerful, the piece begins with thick slabs of bass, setting the perfect foundation for commanding kicks, fuzzed out stabs and a rugged rhythmic core. For as muscular as it is the lead themes bring a reflective vibe, transitioning the piece into a cosmic interlude of sorts, building anticipation with sweeping overlays as a punishing drop sets up a thrilling finale. It rounds out a stunning debut on ICONYC for Vanishing Point who move forward into 2018 continuing to break new sonic territories.
