Stephen K Cal – Donna [Stellar Fountain]

Stellar Fountain rounds out the month of February by welcoming Stephen K Cal back to the label for a new single. Based in Germany, Stephen K Cal first appeared on Stellar Fountain in 2019 with his 'Hyenas' single. Deep in design and remixed by Viel, the release proved to be a standout in Stephen's discography, leading to projects for Bullfinch and Crossfade Sounds where his deep sound continued to be well received. Now presenting his first release of 2022, Stephen returns to Stellar Fountain with 'Donna', alongside remixes from Billion Watchers and Ricardo Piedra.

Clocking in at just a shade over seven minutes, the original mix sets the tone with an upbeat tempo and playful hypnotic quality. Warm beats and clattering percussion get juxtaposed with tranquil synth lines and a buoyant, well shaped groove. Hitting early, the main break builds subtle tension by keeping some of the percussive arrangements in, while a flickering effects narrative smoothly segues into a tasteful drop and uplifting finale.

Returning to the label and providing the first remix is Billion Watchers. On the strength of his 2021 releases 'Amazing' and 'Growth and Dawn', the Russian artist returns to Stellar Fountain for his first remix here. With a deeper approach, Billion Watchers lowers the tempo by 10 bpm for a deliciously deep take that carries the spirit of the original while adding some lovely musicality. Groovy, soulful and full of positive vibes throughout, this is one that a broad spectrum of organic DJs should gravitate towards in the coming months.

The release concludes with label stalwart Ricardo Piedra returning for the final remix. Having made his Stellar Fountain debut in 2017, the Hungarian born, Finland based artist has gone on to appear an additional six times, while also finding a recurring home via Another Life Music, Balkan Connection, Bonzai and Zephyr Music. Known for his timeless progressive approach, the Tampere resident takes 'Donna' into mind expanding territory with layers of nicely manicured percussive and buzzing effects. The lead line works well here, shape-shifting it's way into a glowing break which goes down as the most emotive moment on the release and perfectly spearheads an effects-laden finale. A gorgeous remix from Ricardo, which concludes another well rounded release for Stellar Fountain. Don't miss it.
