Roy Rosenfeld – Phase [Lost & Found]

Guy J's Lost & Found Records caps off a remarkable year by welcoming Roy Rosenfeld back to the label for the latest installment of their 'Found' series. It's been a great year for the Jerusalem born, Tel Aviv based producer. Artists EPs via All Day I Dream, Rumours and TRYBESof, along with a remix for Eli Nissan's anthemic 'Karnaval' have delighted electronic music fans across 2020. Now looking to diversity his portfolio further, Roy rounds out the year landing back on Lost & Found with 'Phase'.

Spread across five tracks it is the title selection which leads the release off. Setting the tone for the EP is a moderately tense yet beautifully engaging intro. Dubbed out tones and percolating electronics gently rise, as vocal overlays and cinematic soundscapes eventually reveal buoyant beats and a warm, swing heavy groove. Although not overt, cross cultural motifs add remarkable depth to the journey, before fragmented piano cascades seal it's brilliance during a haunting break and glowing finale.

Roy then engages label boss Guy J in a rare collaboration, one which serves as perhaps the EP's most dance floor ready cut. We're once again treated to a near two minute intro of meticulously tailored drums and electronics. Organic and trippy in equal measure, they set the stage for a fabulous slice of progressive house. The mountainous groove is wonderfully nostalgic, flowing through emotive chord changes and tasteful modulation, eventually reaching an elegant peak following an effervescent break.

A second collaboration with fellow countryman and Lost & Found label mate Eli Nissan follows. Together the duo pair their creative minds for the playfully, joyous 'There'. A whimsical, childlike quality emanates from the duo's clustered melodies, looping vocals and emerging atmospheres. Eventually melting down into grandiose break which is both lofty and heartfelt.

The release's final two selections find Roy solo once again, beginning with 'Drop of Wisdom'. Rolling rhythms, exotic percussion and hazy harmonics set the course for this enchanting journey. Mounds of perfectly contoured bass roll forward, as emerging atmospheres and panning effects elevate mood. Void of a traditional break, it is a storyboard carried by gentle peaks and valley's, effortlessly moving through rhythmic shifts along the way, as muted pianos add to it's redolent charm. It's this inviting atmosphere which perfectly sets up the final and most sought after selection 'Otro'. Written for and first aired at the We Are Lost Festival in Buenos Aires earlier this year, it served as Roy's set closer, receiving an impassioned response from the crowd. Certainly one of his most memorable productions to date, over eight magical minutes the Israeli artist manages to captures feelings of hope, reflection and elation; resulting in a piece of music to hold close to your heart. It's not only the perfect track to round out the release but also one to cap off an incredible year for both Roy and Lost & Found. Highly recommended
