In a career highlighted by releases on Lost & Found, Manjumasi, Replug, Sudbeat and long standing German imprint Traum Schallplatten, the Australian artist has carved out a unique place in the electronic underground. His deep, emotive creations have long been favoured by progressive music's top guard in Guy J, Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren. Now presenting his first project of 2019, Luka lands on Magician On Duty with a new EP alongside remixes from Mark Slee and Gadi Mitrani. Beginning with the title selection Luka collaborates with USA based Joshua Stephens. Beloved for his subtle details and wistful melodies, the Australian artist uses Joshua's introspective narration as the perfect element in this deep and delicate storyboard. Not only is it meticulously produced with organic design and exotic percussion, but the enchanting vibe which emanates from its core is quite impassioned, making for a gorgeous harmonic disposition that's an absolute joy to listen or dance to. Also included on the release are three solo originals beginning with the mid tempo 'Pocket Full Of Dreams'. It's broken beat cadence, jangly motifs and afro drums come together in a perfect sonic marriage, while hopeful atmospherics and childlike motifs round out a colourful final act. The most up tempo creation 'Soul Sculpting' is not only aptly titled but transports you to a quirky, musical headspace. Backed by a funky underbelly, it's uniquely clustered themes and dreamy vocal fragments are transcendent, conjuring up Mediterranean vibes across an ever evolving nine minute journey. Perhaps the most heartfelt of the four is 'Inside The Vessel', which rounds the collection out on a reflective note. There’s a deeper emotion locked inside this one, something meditative and calming, yet vibrant and exciting, with the main break sitting as the journey's emotional reservoir. The first interpretation of 'Follow The Rainbow' is provided by Mark Slee who makes his label debut here. The US artist and Manjumasi label boss (alongside Atish) has a near two decade long career in the electronic underground. His productions have found a home on Cityfox, Seven Villas and Tenampa Recordings, while he regulatory plays San Francisco's top venues in support of international talents like Danny Tenaglia, Danny Howells, Lee Burridge, Guy Gerber, Andre Lodemann and Stimming. Now presenting his first production of 2019, Mark provides a unique take on 'Follow The Rainbow'. The tempo comes up a touch and the framework gets stripped down for a more spacious feel. The main themes translate really well, delicate and moving, particularly during an evocative break and wistful final act. Rounding out the remixes and also making his label debut is Gadi Mitrani. Based in Istanbul, the Turkish artist has showcased his music on Seven Villas, Tale & Tone and Kompakt's KX division. His debut on Magician on Duty has been much anticipated and he provides a stunning interpretation of 'Follow The Rainbow' to cap off the release. Smooth, emotive and rhythmically buoyant, it makes great use of the vocal elements, chopped and processed for a trippier air, while redolent themes and a meditative break make for a hugely satisfying eight minute jaunt. Another impressive collection of music from Magician On Duty and a welcome debut on the label for one of Australia's finest Luka Sambe. Highly recommended.
