Hailing from Brazil but now calling Japan home, Marcos Mozen is perhaps best known for his work as Hoffmen, a progressive house alias which emerged in 2021 with releases via Late Night Recordings, KRSL and SoulArt Recordings, amongst others. The next two calendar years would see the Brazilian add key projects to his resume, recording EP’s for both Droid9 and Venture Records. 2024 would bring the dawn of a new era for Marcos, adopting his given name for his production work and in turn returning to Venture Records with the well-received ‘Black Rock’ EP. Now, presenting the inaugural release on his newly coined Hayashi Records imprint, Marcos debuts on the label with a two-track showcase entitled ‘Exit’. Beginning with the title selection Marcos crafts a slice of stomped out progressive house which excels because of it's tough groovy nature and no frills arrangement. Full of dark qualities, Marcos smoothly blends punchy kick drums and tight compact grooves, with flashing percussion and rolling rhythms, stepping decisively on the gas as the main break approaches. Looking to bring a greater sense of drama across the interlude, it's a trail of bleepy synth mutations and swirling noise which bring that back room vibe, before a tension-filled build sparks a finale led by punishing beats and charged rhythmic sequences. Beneath the prophetic qualities of 'Exit' lies the subversive vibes of 'Enter'. Marcos expounds his retro progressive vision here, with obsessive rhythms and buzzing stabs blanketing punishing beats and crunchy grooves. Clever percussive co-actions marry with the groove throughout, while a break of clustered claps and emerging noise preludes a finale of chirping stabs and carefully controlled energy. It makes for an auspicious new beginning for both Marcos and Hayashi, one that may remind some of groovy hypnotic sounds which emerged out of Australia in the early 2000s. Highly recommended.
