Praveen Achary returns to Balkan Connection this week for his first EP alongside remixes from Hot TuneiK and Ezequiel Arias. The Indian artist and Juicebox Music label boss last appeared on the Serbian imprint in February of 2016 with a remix of Verve’s ‘Foundations’. Now fresh off an excellent remix for Manual Music, Praveen presents his debut EP for Balkan Connection entitled ‘Subside’.

Since appearing on the scene a decade ago Praveen has grown into one of his country’s most recognizable electronic music talents. He’s built his career in a tactful manner and it continues to pay off. Although primarily known as a progressive artist his sound can be quite universal and such is the case with ‘Subside’. Perhaps one of the grooviest, funkiest creations to ever roll out of Praveen’s studio, it once again shows his incredible sonic scope. Perfectly contoured mounds of bass grab your attention immediately, full of remarkable roll and undulation it roots the fiery rhythmic framework. For as bouncy and club friendly as it is the narrative shifts into something much more emotive as it strips down with intertwined melodies coming together for a delicate yet powerful moment. The companion piece ‘Sonar’ comes in a touch more progressive with a fuller groove and free flowing storyboard. Again the rhythmic elements are ultra crisp and perfectly tailored for maximum dance floor effect. What’s most appealing though is it’s playful melodic nature, evolving ever so subtly until a blissful final break ties the entire piece together.

If you’re a progressive music fan the remixer selections are to die for with two of the scenes hottest talents in Hot TuneiK and Ezequiel Arias. First up Mexican artist and Hookah Records label boss Hot TuneiK brings a deeper touch with roomy grooves and atmospheric motifs. The warmth and character which emanates from Hot’s productions is always something to marvel at and it’s particularly evident here. Nothing big or overblown, just an understated take on the main elements, encased in a glowing atmospheric resonance. Definitely one for late night play.

The release concludes with Ezequiel Arias making his label debut and presenting his first production of the year in the process. The Argentinean artist had one of 2017’s biggest hits with a remix of ‘Tell Me’ by Galestian on ICONYC which enjoyed a six month run in Beatport’s Progressive House chart. A contribution to Replug’s ‘Defined 01’ collection rounded the year out in style and now his 2018 journey begins with a sensational remix of ‘Subside’. The tempo comes down just a touch but with a fuller, driving groove and radiant backdrop the effect is quite incredible. If you’re looking for an example of where progressive house sits at the moment this is certainly it. The reliance on rhythm and groove as opposed to overbearing elements has put the genre in a great place and Ezequiel has nailed that here. No doubt already in the sets of Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, expect to be hearing this one a lot in the coming months. It rounds out a sensational return to Balkan Connection for Praveen who continues to deliver some of the underground's freshest progressive cuts. Highly Recommended.
