Anna Maria X – Break the Matrix [Bellalou Records]

Anna Maria X is back on her record label Bellalou Records, this time showing off her darker side. Each release on Bellalou Records has been focused on Anna Maria X’s own music, and “Break the Matrix” is the sixth release from the imprint.

Prior releases by Anna Maria X have predominantly been uplifting, utilising melodic grooves, and smooth pads to create feel-good energy. This latest release still grips the dancefloor, and tantalises the listener, but does it in a more tense manner.

Breaking away from the style she has released on imprints like Bedrock and Exotic Refreshment, “Break the Matrix” taps into the classic minimal sound of the mid 00’s. Eerie textures swirl in the background, while spacious percussion intertwines with juddering base. Ominous pads, intimate breath sounds, and synthesized droplets tinkle like rain.

The track still has a melodic flow that stays true to Anna Maria X’s trademark sound, and it would still fit within a melodic DJ set. After the breakdown there is a notable step up in energy that moves towards progressive house territory. Progressive House isn’t always upbeat, and darker tracks can be equally as impactful on a dancefloor.

Overall, this is another exceptional production from Anna Maria X who continues to grow as an artist.
