Stil & Bense – Signal in the Noise ft. Orbit Aeolian [ICONYC]

John Johnson's ICONYC opens the spring season by welcoming Stil & Bense back to the label for a new single. Hailing from Osnabrück, the German duo made their debut on the US imprint in March of last year with the 'Evidence' EP. The following year has seen Stil & Bense continue to rise in the world of Melodic House & Techno, landing releases on Einmusika and Get Physical while continuing to forge their bond with ICONYC through two additional singles 'Cheat Codes' and 'Jaywalking'. Now following a contribution to Aftertech's 'Suburbia' collection, Stil & Bense return to ICONYC with 'Signal in the Noise' alongside remixes from Matchy, Allies for Everyone and Las Von.

Diversifying their portfolio further, Stil & Bense collaborate with vocalist 'Orbit Aeolian' on 'Signal in the Noise'. Her spoken word style adds a compelling, storytelling narrative to the German duo's emotive underbelly of growling bass and vibrant melodies. Nostalgic chord changes push energy into the main break where the lead theme provides the backdrop for Orbit's vocal to fully appease the senses. Thought provoking and impassioned, a wall of shimmering melodies rises as the vocal washes away and you're eventually left with a highly danceable drop and goosebump worthy finale.

Making his label debut and providing the first interpretation is Matchy. The Berlin based producer has been a creative force in the melodic house and techno scene. Releases on BeatFreak Recordings, KATERMUKKE, Stil Vor Talent and Timeless Moment highlight his discography, while a unique DJ style has seen him continually delight crowds at Sisyphos and Katerblau. Having delivered an EP for label subsidiary ICONYC NOIR in September of 2018, Matchy now steps up to ICONYC with a stellar rendition of 'Signal in the Noise'. Drawing on the sensibilities of the original the Berlin resident reworks the groove for greater swing and beefs up the percussion with flurries of claps. The vocal plays a primary role as it should, telling it's story against those wavy arps and glowing melodies, perfectly setting up a break filled with anticipation and a thunderous drop.

Returning to the label and providing the second interpretation is Allies for Everyone. Based in New York, Brian Suarez aka Allies for Everyone owns an impressive resume with releases on Einmusika, Steyoyoke and Poesie Musik being the most notable. Having provided two EP's and a remix for ICONYC across 2020, Allies for Everyone now makes a welcome return to the label with a subversive take on 'Signal in the Noise'. Setting the piece in motion, a foundation of buoyant beats, arpeggiated fragments and detailed percussion converge for a wall of pulsating energy. Wispy effects and the vocal storyboard provide depth and intrigue, allowing for a more emotional direction to emerge. A touch headier and less direct than it's predecessors, it not only complements them perfectly but provides a selection for the more astute connoisseur.

Rounding out the remixes is label stalwart Las Von who returns for his sixth appearance. Following a string of impressive releases for the label in 2018 and 2019, the Canadian artist has since gone on to showcase his music with Mango Alley and Zerothree. Now presenting his first production of 2021, Las Von adds further depth to the release with a downtempo version of 'Signal in the Noise'. Coming in as the most emotive of the four mixes, it's laid back groove, colourful atmospheres and impassioned harmonics prove to be the perfect backdrop for Orbit's vocals to deliver their poignant message. A gorgeous remix from Las Von which caps off a very well rounded offering from ICONYC. Highly recommended.
