Nichols – Distant Echoes [ICONYC Noir]

John Johnson's ICONYC Noir welcomes Nichols to the label for his debut EP entitled 'Distant Echoes'. After much success in the Soul of Noise duo, UK artist Grant Nichols aka Nichols made his solo debut in October of 2017. Coming courtesy of Nick Warren’s The Soundgarden, his four track ‘Ethereality’ EP quickly became a favourite of both Hernan Cattaneo and Nick himself. This auspicious beginning quickly led to releases on Balkan Connection, Juicebox Music and Mirabilis Records. Now embarking on his most anticipated project to date, Nichols debuts on ICONYC Noir with a two track artist EP.

Beginning with ‘Ripples’ Nichols crafts a deep, enchanting narrative that sets the tone for the release. Warm and groovy, it’s fluid low end is wonderfully contoured, while crisp percussion, tightly wound arps and warm bass swells fill in the framework. Musically inspired yet tastefully restrained, it’s crunchy effects and charming inflection become quite powerful, perhaps something for the more astute listener, while it’s perfectly story boarded break brings tension in waves, as precise modulation builds to a delicate sizzle, before smoothly shifting energy into an electric finale.

The release concludes with the more progressive minded title piece ‘Distant Echoes’. While the design and overall vibe remain quite true to it's predecessor there’s a fuller more energetic groove behind this one. Mildly astral yet still emotive at points, there’s a strong message inside this one, conveying reflective qualities during the main break. Brief yet poignant, it's a fascinating contrast and one which reveals an artist operating at their creative peak. Nichols remains one of the freshest new names in the progressive house underground, with his ICONYC Noir debut landing as his most mature work to date. Highly recommended.
