Max Freegrant's Freegrant Music rounds out the month of August with a new EP from Jou Nielsen and Paul Ikky. Hailing from Spain, both Jou Nielsen and Paul Ikky have achieved measurable success in their respective careers. Beloved for their cohesive blend of progressive and melodic house and techno, the Spanish pair quickly became a duo to watch following their debut collaborations earlier this year. Although short, the duo's collective discography is meticulous, highlighted by releases via Area Verde, Departure and perpetual Beatport chart favourite Hollystone Records. Now, looking to build on their creative synergy, Jou and Paul combine their extensive forces once again, making their Freegrant Music debut with 'What You Attract'.

Looking to diversify their portfolio further, Jou and Paul have called upon the vocal talents of Ciara Chantelle for lead track 'What You Attract'. Beginning with engaging monochromes, the duo's craftsmanship reveals itself, as percolating sonics flicker atop tight kick drums and perfectly contoured grooves, eventually leading to the introduction of timely percussive phrasing. The main break proves to be highly imaginative, flowing through Ciara's thought-provoking vocals and wavy arpeggiated sequences, building with a classy sense of restraint, before dropping out into stripped beats and retro synth swagger for a grooved out finale.

The companion selection 'Peace Within' sits as a perfect complement with it's triplet-style groove and haunting atmospheric refrains. Definitely one to change the mood and tempo of a set, it's muscular low end and deconstructed vocals set the course for ethereal melodies to shapeshift across an early and expansive break. Building tension and emotion with each successive pass, there's a strong shoegaze mood here, as layers of colour and texture eventually reveal a haunting finale, one which not only rounds out the EP on a strong note, but also showcases a different side of the duo's repertoire. Highly recommended.
