A well known DJ in his home country of Colombia, Sergio Arias aka Gres A has been a fixture of it's nightlife for the better part of a decade. Inspired by the likes of Nick Warren, John Digweed and Hernan Cattaneo, the Medellin resident now steps up for his first official release via Onestar Records. Focusing on the deeper spectrum of house it's the title selection 'Membrane Theory' which gets the EP underway. Warm and tastefully organic, the groove is smooth, inviting and highly rhythmic. Processed pianos and creamy tones work incredibly well together, while a bevy of swirling atmospheres and aquatic effects fill in the framework. The main break offers a more distinct and slightly epic motif, elevating the mood before the subterranean groove drops in for a smooth finish. Moving on to ‘Saimaa’ we get more musical brilliance with a chunky laid back groove and exotic drums leading the way to heavenly pads. Dreamy motifs soon descend over the framework, as percussive splashes add lovely rhythmic shifts. It’s the tonal top line which ultimately carries the narrative though, ever evolving it keeps your attention locked while a gorgeous centrepiece hits at exactly the right moment. The EP’s halfway point is marked with the bass heavy ‘Aura’. Clocking in at a comfortable 120 BPM, it’s meaty groove is not only full of great character but sets the perfect foundation for a variety of drifting atmospheres and melancholic meanderings, not the least of which is a gorgeous tonal drift which underpins the track. The deeper ethos continues with ‘Inari’ which again showcases bulbous beats and a hearty low end. Although relatively indistinct the main themes are gorgeous, nicely set against buzzing tones and finely tuned percussion, making it ideal for a dreamy dance floor. Rounding out the release is 'Our Journey So Far' which adds a punchier yet reflective mood to conclude the EP. Perhaps the most emotive track on the collection it's near ten minute running time is a journey into organic drums. wistful themes and ghostly vocal refrains. It caps off another inspired offering from Onestar Records who continue to unearth some of the Colombia's freshest electronic music talent. Highly recommended.
