Gabriel Batz – Aquil [Strange Town Recordings]

The latest release from Strange Town Recordings welcomes Gabriel Batz to the label for his debut single. The Canadian artist has found a home of some of electronic music’s premiere imprints, most notably Anjunabeats, Coldharbour Recordings and Monster Tunes. Perhaps best known for his euphoric progressive trance crossover style, of late Gabriel has been exploring deeper territory, primarily on his Ora Recordings imprint. Now making his much anticipated Strange Town debut, Gabriel presents his latest single ‘Aquil’ alongside a remix from Subandrio & Nishan Lee.

The original mix gets the release underway with a smooth, timeless sensibility. From its warm, spacious groove to vibrant tones and a hazy harmonic resonance, the mood is one of meditative tranquilly. The beauty of it though is how concise and well tailored it is, clocking in at a modest seven minutes, with a classy build out of the break, it never drags and has just enough sonic sprinkles to carry it's fluid storyboard.

The lone interpretation of ‘Aquil’ is provided by Subandrio & Nishan Lee who make their label debut here. The Sri Lankan duo have been sometime studio partners since first collaborating on a remix for Juicebox Music in July of 2016. Now coming together for the first time since their ‘The Basement’ EP (also for Juicebox Music), the duo land on Strange Town with a stunning remix of ‘Aquil’. Staying true to the main themes from the original the Sri Lankan duo anchor the piece with a rugged, progressive minded groove which sets the course for a sensational journey. It's edgy appeal is undeniable and sits as a perfect compliment to the clean and serene original, while a well crafted break does wonders to deliver those timeless qualities in a slightly more engaging context. A brilliant remix from Subandrio and Nishan Lee which caps off another superb offering for Canada's Strange Town Recordings. Highly recommended.
